Novak Djokovic said Monday he is ready to atone for his shock Australian Open exit as he prepares to return to action in Acapulco.
The 29-year-old world number two makes his bow in the tournament on Tuesday, his first match since tumbling out in Melbourne last month in the second round against Uzbekistand’s Denis Istomin.
The Australian Open defeat was the nadir of a challenging dip in form for the Serbian former world number one, who has won only two titles since July last year.
Djokovic, who is making his debut in Acapulco, said he feels in a healthier frame of mind since his travails of recent months.
“All in all, I feel that I’m in a much better state of mind than maybe I was at the end of last year. So I keep on going. I love this sport. That’s why I’m playing it. That’s why I’m here. I’m just hoping that I can stay healthy and as dedicated as best as I can be,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic, who plays Slovakia’s Martin Klizan in the first round, admitted going out in Melbourne so early had come as a shock.
“I haven’t experienced the first-week Australian Open loss for many years,” said Djokovic.
“But it’s kind of normal and expected to go through those times when you’re not playing as best as you can maybe, as best as you want to be, or maybe the opponent has an amazing day. It’s sport. You have to deal with it, and you can always learn much more from the losses.”
In early round action on Monday, American eighth seed John Isner was upset by compatriot Steve Johnson, going down in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Fifth seed David Goffin had no such difficulty however, breezing past France’s Stephane Robert 6-1, 6-2.

Funtua (Katsina State) – The Nigerian Incentive Based Risk Sharing for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) and Connect Rail Services have inaugurated a new scheme to transport grains by rail from the North to the South.
The Managing Director of NIRSAL, Aliyu Abdulhameed, who inaugurated the service in Funtua, Katsina State on Wednesday, said it would offer farmers ready market and value for their produce.
He said that the scheme would also be run in partnership with the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).
Abdulhameed, who was represented by Dr Maryam Yaro, described the scheme as unique, and said it was to connect markets, industrial zones and ports in the southern part of Nigeria.
He said that the first consignment of 800 tonnes of soya beans had left Funtua for Apapa port, to be loaded onto ships for export.
According to him, the initiative is another dimension to NIRSAL’s historic movement of cattle by rail from Gusau in Zamfara and Nguru in Yobe to Lagos, which was inaugurated in 2016.
“NIRSAL’s role in the grains by rail project is to facilitate bank financing for the purchase of necessary equipment through the provision of necessary bank guarantees, provision of insurance cover for goods being moved, and creation of all relevant linkages.
“The scheme will also serve to reduce cost of transportation, increase profit margins for farmers and provide a smooth link between exporters of agric produce and the local farmers who cultivate the grains in the north’’ Abdulhameed said.
He added, “It is our hope that this scheme will reduce the cost of transporting grains from the north to the south by over 20 percent, boost local production, boost exports and help to conserve scarce foreign exchange.’’
“This will no doubt result in wealth creation for small holder farmers of those produce, job creation, inclusive economic growth, diversification of national revenue and GDP amongst other benefits in line with the Agricultural Promotion Policy of the Buhari administration.”
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Alhaji Usman Abubakar, reiterated NRC’s commitments to the scheme, as it would lower the cost of transporting agricultural produce, thereby, cutting down high cost of food prices.
He called on more companies to partner with the NRC in moving their goods across the country.
“The Nigeria Railway Corporation is happy to work with NIRSAL and Connect Rail Services to get this project off the ground’’ Abubakar said.
According to him, the project is good for the country in this time of recession because it will link farmers to markets and help export their produce.
“It is a project that works for the people and complements the efforts of government to diversify the economy,” he added.
The chairman recalled that over over 2000 cattle have been transported to Lagos since the launch of the cattle movement project in late 2016.
Also, the Managing Director, Connect Rail Services, Mr Edeme Kelikume, said the scheme would revive rain transportation in Nigeria.
Kelikume enjoined farmers and other business owners to embrace the initiative, and look into ways of adding more value to agricultural produce before export.
The event was attended by Olam representative, Mr Ayaz Khatim, who noted that the scheme has openned new window of opportunities to small scale farmers.
The train named Oba of Benin left the Funtua rail station with 30 cabins fully loaded with siya beans.

Syria’s opposition on Sunday announced its 21-member delegation, including 10 rebel representatives, for a new round of UN-sponsored peace talks in Geneva scheduled for February 20.
The delegation will be headed by Nasr al-Hariri, a member of the National Coalition, replacing Assad al-Zoabi, who led the opposition at several previous rounds of talks in Geneva last year.
The delegation’s chief negotiator was named as Mohamed Sabra, a lawyer who was part of the opposition’s technical team during negotiations in Geneva in 2014.
He replaces Mohamad Alloush, a rebel from the powerful Army of Islam faction.
Alloush served as negotiator during three rounds of peace talks in Geneva as well as negotiations in the Kazakh capital Astana in January organised by Turkey and Russia.
Neither Alloush nor the Army of Islam were listed as members of the delegation to Geneva, though it was unclear if the group was boycotting the talks or would be represented by other delegates.
No reason was given for the decision to replace either Zoabi or Alloush.
The delegation includes representatives from several rebel groups, including Faylaq al-Sham, an Islamist faction active around Damascus, and Liwa Sultan Murad, a battalion close to Turkey.
The umbrella High Negotiations Committee (HNC) opposition group said the delegation to the talks would for the first time include representatives from two additional opposition groupings, known informally as the Moscow group and the Cairo group.
But representatives from both groups denied they were included in the delegation.
In the past, the HNC has opposed including the two rival opposition groupings in its delegation, accusing members of the coalitions of being too flexible with regard to the Syrian government.
The Moscow grouping includes former minister Qadri Jamil, and is close to the Russian leadership, while the Cairo grouping includes former foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi.
Invitations to the talks in Geneva have yet to go out, having been delayed in part to allow the opposition to decide on the composition of their delegation.
UN envoy Staffan de Mistura warned last week that he would pick the opposition delegates to the talks if they could not decide on time.
But he later appeared to backtrack and said he would delay dispatching invites.
Ahead of the talks, Kazakhstan has invited Syrian rebels and government officials back to Astana on February 15-16, but neither party has said officially yet if they will attend.
De Mistura will not attend the Astana meeting, but will send a “technical team,” his spokeswoman said.
