The pastor tried to prove to his members that they were sub-human and couldn’t die from drinking the lethal dose of rat poison that he had ‘anointed’, well, he was proven wrong with the death of 5 of his members.

After his members drank the poisonous liquid, all of them started to complain of stomach pains by the evening of the same day.

13 of them were admitted in hospitals for treatment while 5 of them died.

Monyeki has denied responsibility of the death of the 5 members.

Police have now been involved in the case and they are investigating the matter.

So far, nobody has been arrested.

IDP alleges neglect by government (Read full details)

Some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have decried their poor living conditions, poor treatment and neglect from the government.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday in Abuja, they noted that their living conditions have continued to worsen as relevant agencies no longer attend to their needs.

Mr Idris Halidu, Coordinator, Governmental and Public Affairs, Durumi IDPs settlement, told NAN that the over 10, 500 IDPs in the FCT do not benefit from the relief interventions of government.

In his reaction, Mr Ishaya Chonoko, FCT Zonal Coordinator, NEMA, said the agency had conducted its research and identified the real IDPs living within the FCT.

He told NAN that the agency delivers regular relief interventions to authentic camps.

The coordinator disclosed that most of the IDPs within the FCT metropolis have been infiltrated with “Political IDPs’’ who are actually not displaced but have come to feed on government out of laziness.

Chonoko explained that the real IDPs live in suburbs of the FCT and are also working hard alongside relief interventions to cater for their needs.

“This year, we conducted several relief interventions to IDPs settlements in Gurukwu, Jankawa, Kubwagu, Sunshine Estate, Apo district and Waru, where we have the real IDPs.

“Last year, we did countless relief distributions to the above settlements, Wasa, Kuje, Nyanya and even Durumi and Kuchingoro settlements and discovered they had been infiltrated with thugs and hoodlums.

“When you talk with the real IDPs, they are always full of appreciation but the political IDPs would always criticise our efforts,’’ Chonoko said.

The coordinator said that over 200 of the real IDPs have indicated interest to return back to their communities, while the fake ones are leveraging on the circumstance for their selfish interest.

According to Halidu, the living conditions of IDPs in Durumi, FCT, have continued to grow worse since they fled their communities for a safer haven in the FCT due to the insurgency.

“We are underfed, the environment in the communities are not worthy of human habitation, there are no medical arrangement for us when we fall sick and a lot more. 98 per cent of people visiting the camps make the same observations, yet nothing has been done.

“We do not know what agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) are doing.

“They do not spare time to check on us, to see how we are doing, let alone, providing some relief assistance, that is very sad.

“For a country like Nigeria that has contributed a lot in terms of humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping to other nations, this should not be happening to her citizens.

“We appreciate the International Organisations, NGOs, kind hearted individuals, the Nigerian Army and Air force, who have brought relief items and medical care to us,’’ Halidu said.

Also speaking to NAN, Mr Benjamin Yusuf, at the Kuchingoro IDPs settlement, said that though some government agencies gave them relief assistance, the interventions are less frequent and inadequate.

He said since January, they have only received one relief intervention, which was barely enough for them.

Yusuf called on the FCT Minister to look at their condition and alleviate their sufferings by building a decent camp for them, provide them with regular relief and medical items.

He also called on the Federal Government to provide employment opportunities and empowerment for the youth and women, adding that education should also be provided for children in the camp.

Also, IDPs at the Jankawa settlement in the FCT commended the government for their interventions in alleviating their plights, saying that government had given them sources of livelihood.

Mr Paul Musa, an IDP, said that they depended on government for relief intervention but now, in addition to that, they engaged in farming to cater for themselves.

He said that in 2016, they harvested over 20 bags of beans including other food produce.

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has described claims he called Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross a “loser” in a voice-mail message as “absolutely disgraceful”.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes said Pulis, his predecessor, had hit out at Shawcross after the centre-back suggested West Brom had leaked a story about new Stoke signing Saido Berahino’s failed drugs test.

Speaking after West Brom’s 2-2 draw at West Ham United on Saturday, Pulis said he had used the term “loser” in the voice-mail he left on Shawcross’s phone, but not in the context Hughes had suggested.

“It’s absolutely disgraceful,” said the Welshman, who had two spells as Stoke manager from 2002-2005 and 2006-2013.

“Firstly, the phone call I made to Ryan is private. And then, yes, I did mention ‘losers’, but I said about people with innuendos making allegations that weren’t true.

“I did use the word ‘loser’, but I meant it in that way and I actually said, ‘Ryan, you’ve never been that.’

“It has been spun in a horrible way and I have to say, Stoke-on-Trent, forget about the football club, or the people at the football club, and the supporters, Stoke-on-Trent is a wonderful place.

“I was there for 10 years and I have raised millions of pounds for the Donna Louise (Children’s Hospice), which is in Stoke-on-Trent.

“I’ve actually carried the Olympic torch through Stoke-on-Trent. I took them from the Championship to the Premiership.

“I took them to an FA Cup final and to Europe. Do you think I’m going to criticise that area and those people? It’s absolutely disgraceful, whoever has put that out.

“I don’t usually respond to bait and things like that, but I am really, really disgusted that from a few days before we played Stoke, (about) the innuendos coming out about Berahino, West Brom and myself.”

The bad blood between the clubs stems from the revelation that Berahino served an eight-week ban prior to joining Stoke from West Brom last month after testing positive for a recreational drug.

Shawcross suggested West Brom had deliberately leaked the story prior to the Premier League meeting between the teams last weekend, which saw West Brom win 1-0.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Lagos said it had impounded 317 vehicles for non compliance since the commencement of the enforcement of installation of the Speed Limiting Device on Feb. 1.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

He said that the corps was making progress in the enforcement and motorists were also complying with the system.

“We are making progress in the enforcement; about 317 vehicles have been impounded while 368 vehicles have also installed the device out of 1,469 vehicles stopped on the road for verification.

“About 1,109 vehicles were without speed limiters, out of which we ticket 892 and caution 209 vehicles.

“We also caution vehicles, we are there not only to arrest, at times we caution them on speeding and other necessary things that are needed,” he said.

According to him, seven mobile courts have been established to prosecute defaulters.

The sector commander also advised petroleum tanker drivers to install the device in order to prevent unnecessary crashes on the road.

Omeje appealed to the tanker drivers to imbibe the culture of obeying the traffic rules and regulations and consider other road users in the course of their journey.

He said that speed limiters would caution and reduce speeding of any vehicles especially the tankers with highly inflammable substance.

“Tanker drivers should ensure that speed limiters are fixed in their vehicles, at least it will caution them and reduce crashes as a result of speeding.

“At the same time, the device will automatically reduce their speed to 65km per hour which is the normal speed limit for the trucks and tankers to avoid crashes,” he said.

NAN reports that FRSC on Wednesday Feb.1 commenced full enforcement of installation of speed limiting device in commercial vehicles nationwide.

Mr Bisi Kazeem, the Head, Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC had said that sector and field commands of the agency had been fully mobilised for the exercise.

Defiant Iran in missile exercise day after US sanctions

Iran is to deploy missiles for a Revolutionary Guards exercise Saturday in a show of defiance a day after the United States imposed sanctions over a ballistic missile test launch last weekend.

Relations between Washington and Tehran have deteriorated sharply since Donald Trump took office last month promising a tough line on what he sees as Iranian belligerency towards US interests and allies.

Hours after the new US sanctions were announced, Pentagon chief James Mattis charged that Iran was “the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world.”

The new sanctions are the first of Trump’s presidency and target what US officials say is Iran’s weapons procurement network in Lebanon and China.

They are a response to Iran’s test launch of a medium-range ballistic missile last Sunday as well as its support for Yemeni rebels who attacked a Saudi frigate earlier this week, officials said.

Iran’s medium-range missiles can reach 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles), sufficient to strike Israel or US bases in the Gulf.

But the Revolutionary Guards said that the missiles deployed for Saturday’s exercise would only be of very short range — up to 75 kilometres (47 miles).

They said the manoeuvres in the northeastern province of Semnan were aimed at demonstrating their “complete preparedness to deal with the threats” and “humiliating sanctions” from Washington.

“Different types of domestically produced radar and missile systems, command and control centres, and cyber warfare systems will be used in this exercise,” the Guards’ website said.

The new sanctions do not yet mean that Washington has abandoned commitments it made to lift measures aimed at Iran’s nuclear programme, US officials said.

But Trump has made no secret of his contempt for that accord, which his predecessor Barack Obama approved in July 2015, and officials said Friday’s measures would not be the last.

Iran’s vice president on Saturday urged calm heads to prevail.

“These are worn-out accusations against Iran and even the (accuser) himself is ashamed of saying it,” state news agency IRNA quoted Eshagh Jahangiri as saying. “If this nation is talked to respectfully and issues are resolved through negotiations and dialogue… it can be a win for everyone.”

But General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who is overseeing the drills, struck a more strident tone.

“If the enemy makes a mistake, our missiles will land on them,” he was quoted as saying by the Guards’ official site.

Iran is one of seven mainly Muslim countries targeted by the visa ban Trump ordered last week and its government has reacted angrily.

The order, which caused mayhem worldwide, was suspended by a federal judge on Friday but only after Tehran ordered tit-for-tat action against a US wrestling team due to take part in an international tournament in Iran later this month.

Tehran also vowed to impose “legal limitations” on Americans it says are involved in creating and supporting “extreme terrorist groups.”

It said it would publish a list of names later.

US intelligence and Treasury officials are constantly scrutinising Iran’s networks, looking for evidence of extremist funding and advanced weapons procurement.

But Mattis said Washington had no immediate plans to increase troop numbers in the Middle East.

A defence official said the US Navy had sent a destroyer to waters off Yemen in response to the attack on the Saudi frigate.

The USS Cole, which had been conducting operations in the Gulf, is now stationed in the Bab al-Mandab strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, which links the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean.

Tehran says its missiles do not breach UN resolutions because they are for defence purposes only and are not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday that Iran would “never initiate a war”, despite facing threats, “but we can only rely on our own means of defence.”

The missile row is just one of a raft of issues souring relations between Tehran and the Trump White House.

Officials say Trump will sign two executive actions asking the Treasury and the Labor Department to look into ways of reforming rules that were designed to make markets safer and give consumers more protection.

One order will ask the Treasury Department to identify possible changes to a package of financial reforms — know as Dodd-Frank — enacted in 2010 by president Barack Obama.

Among other things, the legislation created the consumer financial protection bureau and required banks to keep more capital on hand to prevent over-leveraging.

The review will also target the so-called “Volcker Rule,” which curbs some speculative investments.

“(We) believe that Dodd-Frank in many respects was a piece of massive government overreach,” said a senior administration official, previewing the orders Trump will sign later Friday.

“It imposed hundreds of new regulations on financial institutions, it established an enormous amount of work and effort for financial firms,” the official said.

Republicans have made no secret of their dislike for the consumer financial protections bureau, which looks set to be targeted in the review.

Any substantial repeal of Dodd-Frank would require congressional action, but the Trump White House is keen to send a signal that it is ready to slash red tape.

“We want to have very deep, very vibrant, very open, very transparent markets without having an enormous burden of regulation,” said the official.

Another executive order to be signed takes aim at the so-called fiduciary rule, which legally obliges financial advisors to act in their clients’ best interest.

“We think this was a complete miss on what they were trying to do,” the official said, adding it had been expensive for investment firms.

The rule was scheduled to come into effect in April, but will be deferred, pending review.

“Americans are going to have better choices and better products because we’re not going to burden the banks with literally hundreds of billions of dollars of regulatory costs every year,” Trump advisor and head of the White House National Economic Council, Gary Cohn, told The Wall Street Journal.

“The banks are going to be able to price products more efficiently and more effectively to consumers,” said Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive.

Trump is signing the measures on the same day he meets with business leaders that include JP Morgan Chase CEO James Dimon and BlackRock Inc CEO Laurence Fink.

Cohn insisted that the deregulation moves “has nothing to do” with Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan or financial services giants like Citigroup or Bank of America.

“It has to do with being a player in a global market where we should, could and will have a dominant position as long as we don’t regulate ourselves out of that,” he told the newspaper.

Market analyst Jasper Lawler at the London Capital Group believes that “unwinding some of Dodd-Frank is a good thing because it will enable smaller community banks to compete, offering competition to consumers.”

However, repealing too much of Dodd-Frank “puts the entire system at risk of a repeat of 2008.
