Africa retail giants Steinhoff, Shoprite shelve merger…Read full details

South African retail firms Steinhoff International and Shoprite Holdings announced Monday they had scrapped plans to merge their local assets to form the continent’s biggest retailer.
The plan announced in December 2016 was geared to create a discount retailer worth over $14 billion to target Africa’s value conscious consumers.
The companies said in a joint statement they “decided to terminate their negotiations related to the proposed transaction” as their shareholders could not reach agreement.
“The fact that the relevant parties could not reach an agreement in respect of the share exchange resulted in the negotiations being terminated,” read the statement.
The proposed ventured was to be called Retail Africa.
Both companies are leaders in the African retail sector.
Shoprite is the continent’s largest supermarket with a footprint in 14 African countries, including Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, oil-producing Angola and Zambia.
It was proposed that Steinhoff would sell its African assets to Shoprite in return for a controlling stake in the supermarket chain.
Steinhoff’s African businesses include a range of credit-based household goods and the company also has extensive interests in Europe.

DPR seizes 1.5 million litres of contaminated fuel vessel in Lagos (Read full details)

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Monday said it seized a vessel, MT JAZI, loaded with 1. 5 million litres of contaminated petroleum product while discharging at Nakem Jetty, Kirikiri, Lagos.
Mr Mordecai Ladan, a Director in DPR, who disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos, said that the vessel was intercepted on Feb. 11 while discharging at Nakam jetty.
Ladan, who was represented by Mr Wole Akinmosoye, Lagos Zonal Controller, DPR, said that after much investigations by DPR it was discovered that the vessel did not have DPR authorisation to deliver product at the depot.
“The vessel is still under the custody of the Nigerian Navy for more investigation. We wish to reiterate that DPR has no record of any product importation by Nakem.
“We also have no record of any arrangement of the facility with a third party for product storage at the time,’’ he said.
Ladan said that the agency subsequently drew samples from the tanks at the facility for laboratory analyses, adding that it was confirmed that the product was actually off specification.
He said that the product failed all the basic parameters, “especially in regards to lour, flashpoint and specific gravity”.
Ladan said that the product being dumped at Nakem did not meet the standard specifications of any white product.
He said that the depot had been sealed by the agency since Feb. 12 and the vessel MT JAZI in the custody of Nigerian Navy.
He said that the product would eventually be evacuated for quarantine by the appropriate government agency.
“We wish to use this medium to reiterate our position on zero tolerance to illegal activities in the depots across the nation and unlanding of off-spec product in the facilities.
“As we have always stressed that depots operators should be reminded that the agency will not tolerate landing of products of untraceable source at the depots,”he said.
The director said that the agency would continue to work to guarantee products’ integrity at the depots and forestall the flow of adulterated products into the retail outlets.
He advised depot operators to adhere to the existing laws permitting vessel berthing and discharge operations between sunrise to sunset.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says Miss Nigeria Pageantry is an integral part of the nation’s creative industry that should be made a national asset.
The minister stated this on Friday in Abuja when the management of Daily Times, the initiator and franchise owner of Miss Nigeria pageantry visited him in his office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the delegation was led by the Chairman of Daily Times, Mr Fidelis Anosike and accompanied by the 40th Miss Nigeria, Chioma Obiadi.
Mohammed said that the competition which started way back in 1957 had evolved over the years and should be strengthened to become a national asset.
Linking pageantry to tourism, the minister said the history of the competition globally dates back to medieval time in 1821 when a business man wanted to attract tourists to his city, New Jersey.
“I look at beauty pageantry as one of the integral part of creative industry because it awakens all segments of the sector. “Beauty Pageantry is beyond gathering together of some beautiful ladies to judge them by their physical attribute. It is a catalyst for the creative industry and it must be encouraged.
“At the beginning of the beauty pageantry all over the world, it was not too popular and some people view it as not decent.
“However, over the years, the occupiers of the titles have made a whole of difference of it.
“Today, we see a beauty pageant becoming a role model and we have seen where the position is used effectively even in times of war and conflict.
“At the level of Miss Nigeria, the occupier has become the ambassador and embodiment of everything that is good in Nigeria and it is not a title to be taken lightly,’’ he said.
The minister advised the delegation to partner with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in promoting the Miss Nigeria Pageantry.
He said the partnership would put the competition on a completely new pedestal.
“We can work out the details, but in doing so you must be ready to let go some of the proprietorship interest,’’ he said.
Anosike said that Daily Times conceived Miss Nigeria pageantry in 1957 to create a young female empowerment platform.
He recalled that the winner of the maiden Miss Nigeria pageantry is Mrs Grace Oyelude, now 85 years, from Kogi state and she represented Kano state at the competition.
Anosike said the platform had helped in promoting the nation, its culture and values and therefore seek collaboration with the ministry to further advance the competition.
Obiadi, the reigning pageant who represented Anambra state, thanked the minister for receiving them and pledged her readiness to partner with government in promoting national cultural values and heritage.

Mourinho deals Shaw fresh Europa League snub…See full details

Luke Shaw received another setback on Wednesday when Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho revealed he will not play in Thursday’s Europa League game against Saint-Etienne.
Shaw has battled back from a double broken leg suffered last season, but has made just one appearance since November and has not featured in United’s last three match-day squads.
The Europa League has provided Shaw, a £30 million ($37.2 million, 35.3 million euros) signing from Southampton in June 2014, with three of his last seven starts.
But Mourinho has no intention of giving the 21-year-old England left-back a run-out in Thursday’s last 32 first leg, telling his pre-match press conference: “He’s not playing tomorrow.”
Pressed over his reluctance to pick Shaw, Mourinho replied: “Because my team is playing well and I am happy with my back four and I’m going to repeat: (Antonio) Valencia, (Eric) Bailly, (Chris) Smalling, Daley Blind.”
The long-term situation for Shaw does not appear positive at Old Trafford and reports have surfaced that Mourinho could be prepared to let him leave the club at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Saint-Etienne’s visit will see United’s record signing Paul Pogba go up against his older brother, Florentin, for the first time in their professional careers.
“We spoke about it, but we spoke in a good way, a funny way,” Mourinho told reporters at United’s training ground.
“It’s a good, nice destiny. I think only Mum Pogba is a little bit in trouble, which is normal!
“It’s difficult for the lady to choose –- it’s not difficult, it’s impossible. I know from Paul that the mum wants a draw, but next week one son will be happy and another one will be sad.
“For the mum it’s a bit of a problem, but they will enjoy playing against each other. Paul will enjoy it and Florentin the same. I think it’s a good thing.”
– ‘We cannot choose’ –
United are the only club in England still active in four competitions: the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup, in which they face a final meeting against Southampton at the end of the month.
Mourinho vowed to continue playing his strongest possible team in each competition, but believes it could leave his squad “in trouble” should they continue to advance on four fronts.
“We cannot choose competitions at Manchester United. We know that our situation is really complicated,” said the United manager, whose side trail leaders Chelsea by 12 points in the Premier League.
“We know that the Europa League is also a competition where we play on Thursdays and that makes it even more difficult for us.
“The accumulation of FA Cup and League Cup and the match postponements makes it really hard for us. If we progress in the competitions we will be in trouble in May, but we cannot choose competitions.
“We play them to win. It’s also a good way to give the team experience. International experience is always a plus.
“The Europa League is not a competition we want to play, but it’s a competition we play and we respect it. The plus is another opportunity to qualify for the Champions League.
“But we know we are in the last 32, not even the last eight or four, so there is a long way to go.
“In the Premier League the door is also open, but we still have a long way to go.”
Mourinho said Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones would all miss Thursday’s game due to minor injuries.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday staged a protest at the National Assembly complex, Abuja over the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
The NLC Chairman, Mr Ayuba Wabba, said that the groups were protesting the delay in the upward review of minimum wage amidst increasing the cost of items in the country.
“We are here to demand good governance and express our support in the fight against corruption.
“More importantly, we demand respect for rule of law, greater accountability and transparency in governance,’’ Wabba said.
He expressed worry that Nigerian workers had been the major victims of the fall-out of corruption and bad governance.
“Today the dollar rate is N500 to one dollar and the salaries of Nigerian workers have remained the same. Therefore, we are here to urge the National Assembly to play an important role to ensure that life is made better for Nigerians.
“We cannot succeed if the fight against corruption does not succeed.
“We appreciate the efforts by the National Assembly to ensure financial autonomy for the local governments and this must be sustained because money meant for the local governments does not get there.’’
The NLC chairman further expressed concern that in spite of the bailout funds to states for workers’ salaries, “the living condition of workers have not been improved because many are not paid’’.
He explained that pensioners in the country were owed up to 77 months and called on the National Assembly to synergise with other arms of government to pay them.
Contributing, the TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama said that the inflation rate in the country was growing astronomically.
Kaigama said that it was time for governments at all tiers to go back to the drawing board to revive the country’s economy.
“Whatever it takes, we must review the structure of our economy. If we must have to kill corruption, the laws have to come from the National Assembly.
“Nigerians are hungry, the cost of living is high, no houses, no light and factories have gone comatose,’’ Kaigama said.
Responding, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said it was time to go into action towards addressing the numerous challenges confronting Nigerians.
According to him, we need to sit down and work out how to make necessary adjustments.
“It can’t continue this way, the exchange rate is high, cost of things in the market have gone high but only the workers’ salaries remain the same.
“By the next time we will meet, I will tell you what the National Assembly has done to improve the living condition of Nigerians,’’ Saraki said.
