FG targets December 2018 completion date for Lagos-Ibadan rail project (Read full details)

Oyo State Governor, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi; President Overseas, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), Mr. Zhao Jinhua; Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; Senate Chief Whip, Sen. Olusola Adeyeye; Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Ameachi; Ogun State Governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun and Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi during the Ground Breaking ceremony of the Lagos-Ibadan Railway Project with extension to the Lagos Port complex, Apapa, at the Nigerian Railway Corporation compound, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

The Nigerian government is targeting December 2018 completion date for the new Lagos-Ibadan rail project launched on Tuesday in Lagos, the country’s acting president Yemi Osinbajo said at the groundbreaking ceremony held in Lagos.

He said the groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of the government’s plan to move speedily to improve transport links with Lagos, the national economic nerve centre and major port to other state capital across the country.

“An active and vibrant railway system confers many benefits on the society. Our ultimate goal is to restore a railway using culture for both commercial and personal transportation. We are confident that the national rail project will create up to half a million jobs and facilitate the movement of up to 3.2 million tonnes of cargo per annum.

“It will also reduce the burden on national highways, thus reducing deterioration of the road networks and increasing the lifespan of our roads. Railway network will support efforts to diversify the economy and enhance our export potentials. Just as several of our cities became known as railway towns in the past we expect to boost economic activities within the railway lines that will eventually cut across the entire country,” Osinbajo said.

Expressing delight that the take-off had become a reality, the Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode said aside boosting regional integration, the agricultural sector would receive the long-awaited boost as the rail line will be a fast and convenient means of transporting farm produce from the hinterland to the city thereby increasing the economies of the States.

He said: “A direct benefit of this project is that containers and goods from the Apapa Port will now be transported by rail thereby reducing the number of trailers and other heavy duty vehicles on our roads.

“A direct consequence of this project would be less productive man hours wasted on the roads due to traffic gridlock and bad roads due to heavy duty vehicles. In addition, we expect the government to expend fewer resources on road repair and maintenance once the rail line takes off and reduce the pressure of articulated vehicles on our roads.”

While thanking President Buhari for approving the Right of Way for the proposed Red Line Light Rail Project by his administration, Ambode also implored the Nigeria Railway Cooperation to cooperate with the State Government during the construction of the Red Line.

“We thank the Federal Government of Nigeria under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari for prioritising this landmark project which will greatly complement our efforts to deliver a transport system that is befitting of a modern city-state. It is also important to note that the Lagos Red Line rail will share the same corridor and Right Of Way with the Lagos-Abeokuta-Ibadan Rail Line.

“We thank the Federal Government for granting approval for the Right of Way for the Red Line. I want to use this opportunity to implore the Federal Government particularly the Nigeria Railway Corporation to cooperate with us during the construction of the Red Line as we work with them to make the Lagos-Abeokuta Rail a big success,” Ambode said.

Actress Emma Watson says revealing photo does not undermine feminism…Read full details

Emma Watson

British actress, Emma Watson hit back at critics who said she betrayed her feminist ideals by posing for a revealing picture in Vanity Fair magazine, where parts of her breasts were exposed.

Watson, the “Harry Potter” movie series co-star and pioneer of the HeForShe campaign to make men advocate for feminism, talked about the photo while promoting her latest film, the Disney live action “Beauty and the Beast.”

“It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is,” she said in an interview with Reuters.

“Feminism is about giving women choice.

“Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with.

“It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.

“I’m confused. Most people are confused. No, I’m just always just quietly stunned,” she said.

The magazine’s photo shoot by acclaimed fashion photographer Tim Walker, showed Watson in an open, white crocheted bolero jacket with no bra or shirt underneath.

“We’d been doing so many crazy things on that shoot but it felt incredibly artistic and I’ve been so creatively involved and engaged with Tim.

“And I’m so thrilled about how interesting and beautiful the photographs were,” she said.

Guardiola keen to keep peace with Aguero…See full details

Pep Guardiola insists his relationship with Sergio Aguero remains strong despite mounting speculation over the Manchester City striker’s future since the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.

Teenage sensation Jesus took Aguero’s place in Guardiola’s starting line-up before breaking a bone in his foot, an injury that may rule the Brazilian out for the remainder of the season.

That forced Guardiola to recall Aguero for an FA Cup fifth round draw at second tier Huddersfield on Sunday.

But it was an uninspired performance by Aguero in the goalless draw and the rapport between forward and manager looked strained.

With just two goals to his name since the end of November, recent events have fuelled the speculation that Aguero, 28, could end his six-year stay with City once the current campaign is over.

But, as Guardiola prepared for the first game of a two-legged tie with Monaco in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, the City boss insisted he is handling Aguero no differently to at any time in the past.

“Sergio has enough experience. He knows, everyone knows,” Guardiola told reporters on Monday.

“We are going to talk with him like with all of his team-mates to convince him in these two games, 180 minutes, that we are not going to be able to do our best performance because in this level it is so demanding in the Champions League.

“It is one of the most beautiful competitions to play, maybe not the most important, but the most beautiful and we have to do our best.

“But the guys who score goals, it is talent, instinct. How they have to move, create spaces. He does not need to be controlled like a TV remote control. He is going to do it himself.”

– Slump –
Guardiola confirmed City captain Vincent Kompany’s injury problems are still continuing after he missed the Huddersfield game and he will sit out the first leg against Monaco.

The City manager, however, hopes Kompany’s leg injury will have recovered in time for the FA Cup replay against Huddersfield next week.

Meanwhile, City’s forward Kevin De Bruyne insists he is happy with his form despite a dramatic drop off in his goalscoring output this season.

Having scored 16 times last season, De Bruyne has netted just five this term, and hit the net twice in the last 18 games dating back to the start of November.

“No, not at all. I never look at my stats,” said De Bruyne when asked if he was worried by his slump.

“I know it is very important for other people. Because I play deeper and not everyone sees that, I am comparing that.

“I can see very good how well I am playing for the team, even without me scoring. If we can win a title I will be very happy.

“I am playing very consistently. I played a little more defensively than at the start of the season but we changed a lot of positions for me personally.

“I know people are looking at a lot of statistics, for me I am playing better than last year but maybe statistically a bit worse.”

Trump dismisses talk of Russian connection as ‘non-sense’ (Read full details)

President Donald Trump on Wednesday dismissed talk of a Russian connection as “non-sense,” two days after the resignation of his national security adviser Michael Flynn renewed questions about Moscow interference in US politics.

“This Russian connection non-sense is merely an attempt to cover-up the many mistakes made in Hillary Clinton’s losing campaign,” Trump said in an early morning post on Twitter.

The New York Times on Tuesday reported that US intelligence agents intercepted calls showing that members of Trump’s campaign had repeated contacts with top Russian intelligence officials in the year preceding the November 8 presidential election.

US intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russia had intervened in the electoral process at least in part to help Republican property tycoon Trump win.

In a barrage of tweets, Trump took fresh aim at some of the media Wednesday, while praising the conservative Fox television network.

“The fake news media is going crazy with their conspiracy theories and blind hatred. @MSNBC & @CNN are unwatchable. @foxandfriends is great!” he tweeted.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Trump also accused the US intelligence services of having leaked information, directly pointing the finger at the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Information is being illegally given to the failing @nytimes & @washington post by the intelligence community (NSA and FBI?) Just like Russia,” Trump wrote.

He lobbed a hardball at his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama, writing “Crimea was TAKEN by Russia during the Obama Administration. Was Obama too soft on Russia?”

Afghan police officer kills eight colleagues (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2kafClR

Local media reported that the suspected assailant police officer had joined the Taliban a year ago.

Eight police officers, all members of the same family, were killed in northern Afghanistan on Friday after a colleague working with the Taliban drugged and shot them at a checkpoint, police and government officials said.

No group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack but a spokesman for Faryab provincial police told AFP the suspected assailant had “fled back to the Taliban”.

The victims, four regular police and four auxiliary officers, “were drugged by their colleague who then opened fire on them at a police checkpoint in the Almar district” of Faryab province, provincial police spokesman Abul Karim Yoresh told AFP.

District governor Saleh Saleh confirmed that all eight of the police officers were members of the same family.

Local media reported that the suspected assailant police officer had joined the Taliban a year ago.

A similar incident happened in September when two Afghan soldiers opened fire on their sleeping colleagues in their barracks in the northern province of Kunduz.

On Wednesday the US government’s Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) said in a report that the death rate among Afghan troops and police soared last year as the Kabul government’s overall control of the country declined significantly.
