Gambian police said they arrested 51 people in a former stronghold of ex-president Yahya Jammeh for harassing followers of new leader Adama Barrow, amid lingering tensions following Jammeh’s flight into exile.

Jammeh narrowly lost a Dec. 1 election to Barrow after 22 years of authoritarian rule.

Jammeh initially refused to step down but fled to Equatorial Guinea last month as international military forces descended on the capital Banjul to uphold the election result.

The 51 were arrested on Sunday in the western town of Kafenda, a Jammeh stronghold, for insulting people returning from Barrow’s inauguration celebration at the national stadium on Saturday, said police spokesman Foday Conta. Some threw stones, Conta added.

Twenty-six of the arrested were juveniles and were released on bail, while 25 were being detained pending an investigation, Conta said.

A spokesman for the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), Jammeh’s party when he was in power, said those arrested were APRC supporters and were wearing t-shirts bearing an image of Jammeh’s face.

“They were provoked by the supporters of the coalition (Barrow’s party) who … were calling Jammeh all sorts of names and saying he was a killer. Then a quarrel ensued,” said spokesman Seedy Njie.

Human rights groups accuse Jammeh of torturing and killing opponents during his time in power. Barrow has pledged to reverse many of Jammeh’s policies, including arbitrary detention.

Barrow vowed in his Saturday speech to enact sweeping reforms including bolstering a weakened economy.

Police arrest man for killing own children

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The Cross River Police Command has arrested one Anyanime Festus, 33, for killing his twin children, Emediong Festus and Mfoniso Festus, both 11 years old for allegedly being witches.

Presenting the suspects to newsmen in Calabar on Tuesday, the Acting Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, alleged that the suspect killed his twins for confessing to being witches.

Inuwa said that the incident happened on Jan. 11, 2017 in Uyanga community in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the matter was reported to the police by one David Innocent and Joseph Orok from the same area.

“The incident happened on Jan. 11, 2017 in Uyanga community in Akamkpa Local Government Area following a report to the police by one David Innocent and Joseph Orok. They reported that the two female identical twins were found lying along Uyanga bush track in Akamkpa.

“According to them, one of the twins was found dead while the other was lying down and was unable to speak.

“Much later, the other twin that was lying down was able to speak and she gave her name as Emediong Festus and that of her twin sister as Mfoniso Festus, both 11 years.

“That on Jan. 10, 2017, their father told them he was taking them to their mother, and on getting to a bush track, he gave them malt drink suspected to be mixed with poisonous substances.

“Shortly after they drank the malt, her sister died and their father abandoned them there,’’ he said.

The commissioner further said that the other twin later died in the hospital, adding that both corpses were now deposited at the General Hospital, Akamkpa, for autopsy.

The suspect, who is a taxi driver, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that since the incident happened, he had “not been himself”.

Festus, who said he regretted his action, blamed the incident on the devil.

“I poisoned them through the malt I gave them to drink. I did it because they confessed to being witches,” he said.

http://ift.tt/2l7Qf5t

ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday said the Federal Government had inaugurated the negotiation team set up to look into its demand.

The National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that with the inauguration, all issues bordering on the welfare of members of the union would be appropriately addressed.

“As I speak to you now, the negotiation team is being inaugurated today in Abuja.

“Members of the team include representatives of the Federal Government, ASUU, other staff unions in the universities, the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education,’’ Ogunyemi said.

According to him, the union expects that members of the team will come to the negotiating table with open minds.

The unionist noted that with the inauguration, the team would speedily identify and provide the much needed solutions toward moving the tertiary education system forward.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the team to proffer lasting solution to the “decadence” in the university system and reposition it to for global reckoning.

ASUU on Nov. 16, 2016 embarked on a one-week warning strike to protest government’s failure in implementing the 2009 agreement.

The union also cited non-implementation of the 2013 MoU between the parties and what it described as “gross under funding’’ of the university system in the country.

A 36-year-old Egyptian woman Eman Ahmed, reportedly the heaviest in the world, at 500 kilogrammes reached Mumbai on Saturday for surgery.

She entered Mumbai in a cargo plane with hopes high that several rounds of surgery could help her reduce weight.

Ahmed has gained weight since she was a child.

She has already suffered a stroke that left her right arm and leg paralysed and affected her speech, according to the Save Eman online campaign page, which is raising money for her treatment.

She cannot move from her bed.

Ahmed has been admitted to Mumbai’s Saifee hospital, where a special facility with large doors and a fortified bed has been created for her, a hospital spokesperson said.

She will undergo a series of tests before doctors proceed to carry out surgical procedures to reduce her weight.

They may take six months or more.

Ahmed left her home in Egypt’s Alexandria for the first time in 25 years to fly to Mumbai in a specially prepared Egypt air cargo aircraft, Egypt air head Safwat Musalam, said.

Ahmed was lifted into the cargo plane by cranes, the head of the Egypt air Cargo Company, Bassem Gohar, said.

At Mumbai, Ahmed was again lifted out of the aircraft by a crane onto a waiting truck.

She was driven to the hospital accompanied by a police escort and an emergency ambulance.

Ahmed has been admitted to the care of bariatric surgeon Muffazal Lakdawala and his team, a spokesperson for Saifee Hospital said.

Lakdawala’s team has been treating Ahmed for the past three months.

Two doctors from Saifee Hospital and Ahmed’s sister, Shaimaa, accompanied her on the flight.

“We have big hopes that she will return home in good health,’’ Shaimaa said.

She asked all Egyptians to pray for her sister’s recovery.

Ahmed has severe lymphedema, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, severe obstructive and restrictive lung disease, gout and is at a very high risk of pulmonary embolism, according to the Save Emaan online campaign.

Vehicle importation ban can trigger transnational crime, says lawmaker (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2lccZxr

Tokunbo Vehicles

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation, Sen. Ali Wakili, says the ban on importation of vehicles through land borders can engender rise in transnational crime.

Wakili at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja said that increased crime could be recorded because adequate measures were not put in place for the implementation of the ban.

According to him, though the policy is good, the timing is bad in view of the fact that the alternatives available are not adequate.

The former Controller of Customs said that the ban had started inflicting hardship on border communities’ residents, who rely mainly on border trade for livelihood.

“The timing is bad in view of the present hardship in the country.

“With the ban, the Customs Service will be inundated with anti-smuggling activities; there will be wastage of time, wastage of resources and loss of lives.

“The Customs Service will equally have bad public relations from the border communities because they will be antagonistic to officers.

“You people in the media reported when there was a problem at the border last year over a vehicle that someone was shot dead and there was riot as a result.

“Besides, every day you report clashes around Badagry and Idiroko borders.

“This policy just came in December and you are implementing it by the first day of January without taking the people into confidence by explaining to them what you want to do.

“There was not even moratorium, no grace period. Some people from the North came to me during our last recess to say that this policy is anti-people,’’ he said.

According to Wakili, while smuggling should be discouraged at all cost, government ought to have created enabling environment before going on with the ban.

He said, ‘’People will be ready to do the correct thing once there is an enabling environment.

“I have said over time that we should build inland container depots and rejuvenate the railways.

“By the time we build the inland container depots, people will consign their goods and as soon as they drop from the ship, put them on the train and take them to the hinterlands.

“ We are not saying the Customs Service does not have the right, we are saying that it is bad timing.

“We do not want the hardship Nigerians went through during the ban on importation of rice to repeat itself.’’

The lawmaker urged the Service to have a re-think on the policy, adding that the present administration was voted in to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians and not to inflict pain on them.

US hits Iran with fresh sanctions after missile tests

The United States slapped fresh sanctions on Iran Friday to punish Tehran for recent ballistic missile tests and its support for Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The first sanctions against Iran by the Trump administration targeted companies and individuals in Iran and China identified by the United States as supporting Tehran’s ballistic missile program and the Revolutionary Guards military force.

“Iran’s continued support for terrorism and development of its ballistic missile program poses a threat to the region, to our partners worldwide, and to the United States,” said John Smith, acting director of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

The measures came after Iran on Sunday test-fired a medium range missile, which the White House contends violated a UN Security Council resolution proscribing missiles that could carry a nuclear device.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Flynn declared he was “officially putting Iran on notice” over the launch.

The newest sanctions seek to lock those blacklisted out of global trade and finance by banning any American or US-based entities from doing business with them. They named three trading networks and individuals allegedly involved in supplying goods to Iran’s missile program.

One against already-sanctioned Iranian businessman Abdollah Asgharzadeh involves several Chinese companies and suppliers, mainly the Cosailing Business Trading Company based in Qingdao.

Other groups named include the Rostanian network based in the Gulf region, and Lebanon-based Hasan Dehghan Ebrahimi, identified as a Revolutionary Guards official whose business the Treasury said launders money and goods for the Hezbollah militia group.
