Ibadan Golf Club will host Nigeria’s maiden qualifier for the yearly 3E Actuaries Open Championship in Equatorial Guinea, the organisers have revealed.

The Nigerian qualifier, which is part of 3E’s expansion plan, will hold in August. According to the organisers, the qualifier will not only feature members of the Professional Golfers’ Association of Nigeria, but it will also accommodate players from West and Central African countries, who nurse the ambition of featuring at the all-expense paid finals in December.

Ghana, Togo, Gambia, Cameroun and Gabon are key countries expected to fight for final spots with their Nigerian counterpart at the Ibadan Golf Course.

Meanwhile, the qualifier also has a N10 million purse tied to it, while $300, 000 is being proposed for the finals in Mongono in December

The players that pick the final ticket in Ibadan would be drawn alongside qualifiers from the European leg, while lady professionals that debuted at the last edition would still earn their spots via invites and wild cards.

Two Nigerian players, Oche Odoh and Gift Willy won the first-three editions of the event, with Odoh registering his name twice. Englishman Hinton Craig is the defending champion.

Laure Beaufils

Delta pledges law to protect rights

The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs. Laure Beaufils, has promised to make empowerment of women and girls a priority to ensure that Nigerian women live a fulfilled life.

Speaking at a reception to mark this year’s International Women’s Day in Lagos with the theme “Be Bold for Change,” Beaufils commended women for their roles in society, adding that she was particularly inspired by the Nigerian women.

She called for an end to gender inequality in every facet of the society.Beaufils, who is the first female British Deputy High Commissioner however, regretted that no country in the world has achieved gender equality and decried the lack of equal participation of women in politics.

“Women and girls make up to 80 per cent of the refugees and displaced persons in any society. The female gender is subjected to violence and sexual abuse, exposed to torture and has been continually under-represented in most facets of life,” she said.

She urged women to step out of their comfort zones and make effort to change lives for the better by believing in themselves, supporting one another and educating the girl child.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Monday Igbuya, has promised to protect the rights of women and girls through legislative reforms.

Igbuya stated this in a statement in Asaba to mark the International Women’s Day.He urged women to rise up for a change to correct the barriers militating against gender equality in the country.

The speaker said gender parity could only be achieved if women have equal access to education, tools of opportunity and protection against all forms of violence and discrimination.

“I’m Not Interested In Playing His Father” – Aamir Khan On Sanjay Dutt’s Biopic…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2mIvLkC

Aamir Khan
One movie that has been in the news in recent times is Rajkumar Hirani‘s biopic on Sanjay Dutt starring Ranbir Kapoor. While Kapoor Junior has been working hard to ape Sanju’s physique from his younger days, Hirani is still finalising on the extended cast. While the movie is on Sanjay’s life, a major part of it explores his relationship with his father Sunil Dutt.

Fun fact for all you Aamir Khan lovers out there – he was first offered the role of Sunil Dutt. According to a report in DNA, the writers of the film first went to Aamir for a narration but he was rather surprised when he heard the part they’d come for. We hear he very politely told them, “I thought you were coming to narrate the role of Sanjay Dutt. I am not interested in playing the role of his father.

The role will now be played by veteran Paresh Rawal. But can you imagine seeing Ranbir and Aamir in the same frame? That would’ve been be all sorts of amazing!

Rohit Kamra
Actor Randeep Hooda is all set to make his TV debut with MTV’s latest reality show Big F, which explores the deepest and darkest fantasies and experiences of young Indians. Interesting! At the launch, he was asked about what he thought about slut-shaming, because let’s face it, almost every woman has been slut-shamed at some point in her life for the choices she makes.

Here’s what he said,

The show talks to men that women are not an object of your desire, she is a person. If a woman enjoys sex, it doesn’t mean that she is a slut.

AMEN!

“Ranveer Singh Will Settle Down The Fastest” – Varun Dhawan…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2mlsxRp

Varun Dhawan is busy gearing up for the release of his big Dharma film Badrinath Ki Dulhania, and from the looks of it, this film is going to be one joy ride! After shying away from questions about his personal life for years now, Varun has slowly been talking about it. He recently accepted the fact that there is a special someone in his life aka Natasha Dalal, and he gave her full credit for sticking by him through thick and thin.

So, it’s obvious that people would want to know more. At a recent promotional event, VD was asked about his take on marriage and whether he plans to tie the knot some day.

Definitely! It is very different now. We discuss so much about live-in relationships and all that. Love is love. Marriage is something that cements people’s love and you should do it only if you want to, not because you are forced to. Yes, I believe in the institution of marriage and I feel that it totally works.

When asked who out of the younger lot of Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Sidharth Malhotra etc. would tie the knot, pat came the answer:

I think maybe Ranveer will settle down the fastest. I guess the naughtiest ones always go first.

Is he hinting at something here? Time will tell… We can only hope that’s true!

• Commends UN Security Council on IDP response
• Saraki seeks affordable healthcare for Nigerians

The Senate has asked the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to suspend the implementation of the proposed plan to collect duties on old and new vehicles in the country.

The resolution of the Senate followed a point of order raised by the Senate Deputy Leader, Bala Na’Allah.

Adopting the motion yesterday, the Senate said the status quo should be maintained until the Controller-General of NCS appears before the relevant committees of the Upper Legislative Chamber to explain the rationale behind the policy.

Senate President Bukola Saraki said the NCS new policy contravened the law and would therefore not stand.

“This is a very straightforward motion and our responsibility here is to ensure that we oversight agencies and ensure that they comply with the law. It is very clear that this circular does not meet the requirement of the law. The Customs committee should quickly look into this matter and come out with a way forward,” Saraki noted.

Also, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, called on his colleagues to resist the new directive by NCS.

He said the directive was illegal and lacked common sense.

In the same vein, Dino Melaye, who seconded the motion, said that if allowed to stay, NCS officers would be corrupted, while suffering Nigerians would bear the harsh brunt.

Other lawmakers, who indicated interest to speak on the issue, were not allowed by Saraki. Instead, he referred the issue to the Senate Committee on Customs and Excise.

In another development, the Upper Chamber has commended the 15-person delegation of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, led by Matthew Rycroft, the UK Permanent Representative to the UN and the Security Council’s President for the month, for deeming the crisis in the North-East worthy of a high level delegation and response.

Speaking on the development in Abuja yesterday, Senate spokesperson, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, stated that the Senate fully aligns with the stance of the UN delegation.

Abdullahi, who stated that the Senate had categorised the passage of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) Bill as pivotal in Nigeria’s efforts to restore peace and security in the region, said the Upper Chamber would continue to work with the UN Security Council as development partners.

Institution denies students’ involvement

Movements in and out of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, were yesterday disrupted by protesting students who were demanding for immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the 11 executive members of the institution’s students union.

The protesters, who defied the heavy rain, barricaded the university main gate hindering students and visitors from entering the premises. Other demands include a call to lift the “illegal ban on the UNILAG Students Union” and “improvement in welfare and conducive learning environment.”

Besides, the students at the protest led by the leadership of the Lagos State Chapter of the Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Alliance of Nigerian Students against Neoliberal Attacks (ANSA), asked the management of the institution to retract the indemnity forms it mandated students to sign and stop attacks on activists and unionism.

Meanwhile, Deputy Registrar, Information Unit of the institution, Toyin Adebule, in a telephone conversation with The Guardian, denied that the protesters are UNILAG students.

According to him: “The protesters are activists and rusticated students who lost their case in court. Now that they have lost in court, they put up the jankara protest. We have issued a press statement to that effect informing the public that the University of Lagos students are not protesting. The gathering outside the gate consists of rusticated students and allies. They have challenged the university in court and the case has been struck out.”

Abuja airport shuts down tonight for N5.8b runway repair (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2mzdtSR

• Work still ongoing to fix electricity, seats, toilets at Kaduna

The Federal Government yesterday officially announced the temporary closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, for six-week rehabilitation work on its runway.

It was learnt that the repair exercise and logistics would cost N5.8bilion.The announcement was made jointly by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, his counterparts in Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and Aviation, Hadi Sirika, yesterday to put an end to weeks of speculations, debates and apprehension on a likely postponement of the closure date given the state of preparedness at the Kaduna Airport.

Mohammed said the airport, which would be closed for six weeks would be officially shut from 12 a.m. today.Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said the Federal Government had fulfilled its promise to make the Kaduna Airport available and ready as an alternative.

However, workers still need to fit electricity, seating and toilets to a new terminal at the Kaduna Airport, which will handle the capital’s air traffic but lacks capacity.

Most floor and ceiling tiles have been fitted and all air conditioning units have been installed, but electrical fittings remain work-in-progress, chairs for the arrival and departure areas lie strewn about and a car park expansion is incomplete.

“Contractors are working day and night,” said an official from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who is not authorised to talk publicly on the matter.

This situation runs contrary to the statement of the Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Saleh Dunoma, who said in Abuja, the Kaduna Airport is now set for international operations.

According to Dunoma, “All the things we need for international operations are on ground. What is important actually is the safety equipment for the landing of the aircraft. We have seen the runway is good, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) has been installed and the terminal building is ready.

He added: “I think this is one of the luckiest airports. They have five generators as standby power supply. So we have more than enough. Also, Fola Akinkuotu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that once the Abuja Airport was closed, NAMA would deploy the mobile tower from the airport to Kaduna to complement what is already on ground.Akinkuotu said: “As far as this (Kaduna) airport is concerned, NAMA management is very satisfied that we have done a good job.

Indigenes of Kogi State at the memorial of the late Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr. James Ocholi, have lamented their non-representation in Buhari’s cabinet.

They said their expectation of naming Ocholi’s replacement on the Federal Executive Council (FEC) failed to happen. But speaking at the occasion in Abuja, the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Kazaure, said FEC members would purchase 500 copies of the book and also support the Ocholi James Trust.

Also, the guest lecturer at the event, Prof. Kabir Mato while eulogising the principles that Ocholi stood for, said that Nigerians must find it acceptable that the country is in this present state because of the activities, actions and inactions of past administrations.

He, therefore, cautioned that Nigerians must know that the desire for change has consequences and that the current hardship is part of the process that must be undergone. The Minster of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who chaired the occasion, stressed the need for Nigeria to get her values.
