QUEEN’S SCHOOL STUDENT’S DEATH: They want to cover up, Vivian’s father alleges

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Elizabeth Uwandu

Please disregard the malicious rumour about outbreak of epidemic in Queen’s College. There is nothing like that as the college had her annual Inter -House Athletics Competition on Wednesday 23rd Feb, 2017. Everybody present at the event could testify that there wasn’t any outbreak of any epidemic in the school.

The college is now on Mid Term break and no student is on admission at the sick bay. We implore you all to calm down as there is nothing to panic about”. With those words, in a text message to parents, the management of Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos, last month, dismissed the claim that there was an epidemic in the school.

It  also said no student died contrary to the claim in some quarters. But the father of one of the students of the school, Vivian, Mr Michael Osuinyi, said his daughter died a week before the college inter-house sports as a result of water contamination..

According to him, Vivian, 13, died on February 15 whereas the inter-house  sports took place on February 23. The father said the school’s PTA called him when he went to bury the daughter in the village to confirm that it was contaminated water that caused the death.

Mr  Osuinyi, after  the requiem mass organised  for her daughter, on Monday, at St Pio Catholic Church, Orile, Lagos, gave an  insight into what he claimed  happened.  He told Sunday Vanguard that he didn’t want to say anything  on Vivian’s death because he already left the judgment in the hands  of God but  that  the text message circulated to the parents  got him annoyed. He said it was  like trying to cover up as if his daughter’s  life that was cut short did  not matter to the Queen’s College management.

Mr  Osuinyi, who  called  himself  a  former Queen’s College parent, said, “My daughter’s  death was caused by gross neglect  on the part of the school authorities.

“Vivian was released by the school to us on Saturday,  February 11, around 7pm, after receiving a  call at 5pm from  the school within an hour’s  notice of her being  seriously sick. She was being given malaria drugs despite her stooling and vomiting. She took the drugs judiciously yet her condition deteriorated. She was taken to two hospitals where doctors confirmed her dehydration before she died on Wednesday”.

He went on: “ My question is, why did the school authorities give my daughter and other students who had complained of being sick malaria drugs, even after the Parent Teacher Association Chairman, Mr Ofor Dike, called to commiserate with my family, admitting that the school water was contaminated?

“Why was there no immediate treatment given to the students or the students sent home to avoid the death?  Rather, the Chairman said he personally bought 3,000 bags of pure water for the students? What happened after that? Why were the students stopped  from calling their parents in case of emergency? And why was my family not called until 5pm on Saturday, February 11 to inform us of Vivian deteriorating situation? These are the questions  I  am asking QC.”

Meanwhile,  Alhaja Shittu, the Vice Chairman, PTA of the Queen’s School,  who was also at the mass,  accused  some parents of  trying to spoil the name of the school rather than  urging calm when some  parents told her to call for parents meeting before the school’s resumption from Mid-Term holiday.

On the part of the old girls association of the school, they prefer to just monitor the situation  since the government wants  to investigate. A member of the association, who spoke anonymously, said they took the position in order not pre-empt the outcome of the investigation

Understand the diffrence between the mixed multitude and great multitude in the house of God

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Pastor Layi Bamidele

THE book of IITimothy 4v2-4 says ; “preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all long-suffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.”

Many believer come to church not because they love God but because they want to use God and discard their maker.

The promies of God can be altered due to many reasons. John 4 v 23-24 says “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Every believe has a promised land it takes greater commitment and discipline to get there.

The mixed MULTITUDE is different from the Great MULTITUDE. After this message I did like for you to search your heart and think of the group you belong to in the house of God. God prepared the Israelites for the promise land but took them through the wilderness. The mixed multitude reflects the Egyptian spirited people in the midst of the Israelites. When the children of isreal left Egypt to the promise land the mixed multitude left with them.

Many people in the church today are mixed multitude cos they look good in the outside and stinking grave in the inside. This people covers themselves with godliness but they they are filled with falsehood inside. Do you know that many Israelites left Egypt but Egypt did. Not leave them.

The mixed multitude are in the church today to cause commotions and confusion. These involves pastors, Pastor’s wife, workers and members as well. When god solved the problem of the first church they later turn around to be God’s problem. Take note of this the mixed people are always attracted to those people going to the promised land.

They are fault hinders not pathfinders, they are always part of the moves but not part of the convenant. They join the visionary without knowing the vision they got close ,they bring in their vision and cause division. Disobedience is a destroyer of destiny and purpose terminator.

It is not enough to go to church, it takes an inner change of heart. God takes the wilderness route to train your mind church are suppose to preach the living word to the dying world. The mixed multitude are always like Cancer in the bone. The mixed multitude are always biting the fingers that fed them.

The mixed multitude are often lay their leaders on the alter of slander, character assination and disrupt. People you train can turn back to stab you at the back. The mixed multitude are highly deceptive, they pretend to love their leaders ( their pastors) but turn back against you when you are not around.

May I say this ” Christianity is not all about religion but all about relationship with God. Religious people don’t go far in life they only go about in circles. Get rid of the midst of the mixed multitude before they get rid of you. They are dangerous they cause division and confusion in the church.

Listen to me, they look of holiness those not guarantee the heart of holiness. They conterminate God’s children. So many pastors and ministers have a habit of being jealous of one another they are always unease with the success of their fellow’s success. The book of Matthew 7V 15-20 and also in the of IITimothy 3V1-9 you will see where Paul is speaking to Timothy there let me show you the clearity of the things you will see in the life of the character of the people that are mixed multitude.
(1) They are deceptive
(2) They are imperious to corrections.
(3) They are evil initiators.
(4) They are provocative
(5)They are not teachable
(6) They are casualties
(7) They are rebellious
(8) They are supplanted
(9) They are fault finders and not pathfinder in the church.
(10) They are attracted by miracles
(11) They turned against the person God use for them when they are in trouble
(12) They cover their sins with confusion and disagreement in the church.
(13) They discouraged the genuine serve of God with all manners of character assination
(14) They will not leave the church but discouraged new ones that come into the church or stay where they will be blessed.
(15) They for a clique in the church to counter every instructions given on the pulpit. They also gather in a place where they discuss and run down the message preached by their pastors.

My brothers and sisters as you read this message I want you to check yourself to see which one you belong and repent today. Are you in the midst of the mixed multitude of great multitude?

Many Christians today when they go to church they went there alone, the moment their problem is solved they will no longer face what brought them to that church but they will be looking for the fall of that church and the visionaries. May God help us, There are friends and their friends. Beware!!!!

Iroko, Aketi and South-west Politics

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Tunde Rahman

The constant travels and other engagements I have been involved in lately will permit just general interventions in a few recent events and developments in the country, particularly in Ondo State as they affect two leaders of the state- one just ended his two terms of office, the other has just been inaugurated as a first term governor.

The interventions, in the final analysis, will dovetail into what the exit and entrance mean for the South-west and the All Progressives Congress, which controls the region at present.

So, I like to crave the indulgence of readers to allow me engage in a few takes, to share some of my thoughts on issues, which include Dr. Olusegun Mimiko’s transition from a state governor to an ‘ordinary’ citizen, the inauguration of former Nigeria Bar Association president, Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu aka Aketi, as the new Ondo governor, and the places of the two leaders in the politics of the South-west and of the governing APC.

I grouped Mimiko, popularly called Iroko, and Akeredolu together in the APC advisedly. This is because as you read this, Mimiko, who is ex-Labour Party and ex-governor of PDP, may have concluded his plan to move to his third political party in this dispensation by pitching his tent with the APC. The plan to switch over to the party was said to have begun since he failed in his bid to install his favoured candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, as successor.

In the beginning, Iroko held out so much promise as a politician who would go very far. He began as Commissioner for Health in the state. In 2003, he was Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu administration on PDP platform. After an alleged disagreement with Agagu, Mimiko was tapped by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to be minister in Abuja, succeeding Mrs. Mobolaji Osomo in 2005.

Iroko resigned from the cabinet to contest the 2007 governorship election against his erstwhile boss, Agagu, damning everything, including Obasanjo’s opposition to the plan. He won the election, though his mandate was only restored after a two-year legal battle.

Mimiko showed so much promise, particularly as governor. He began with people-oriented programmes, some of which fetched him local and international awards. He identified with Ondo people and the people celebrated him in return. Many analysts then saw him as the third force to Obasanjo and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s political tendencies in the South-west.

With support and encouragement coming from the Afenifere leadership, which base had by then shifted to capital Akure, it was smooth sailing for Mimiko. He won a second term in office, a jinx other governors who came before him in the state could not break.

But the bubble burst during his second term. Now, Mimiko is in a situation where he is bereft of power and influence. How did this happen? Just how did he box himself to this ruinous corner? I will attempt to answer this with two explanations. One is self-inflicted, the other flows from the traditional concept of good and bad. The first could be located in Mimiko’s brand of politics, which, in my view, lacks consistency and seems devoid of any clear cut principles.

Let me explain this. To contest the 2007 governorship poll, Mimiko opted for Labour Party because he knew, quite understandably too, that Obasanjo would block him from getting the PDP ticket.

But when one thought he had imbibed the ideals of the party and was firmly rooted in LP, emerging its major gladiator with a horde of followers, he allowed former president Goodluck Jonathan, who desperately wanted a second term in office in 2015, to goad him into joining PDP. In the process, Mimiko lost his dynamism and credibility.

Later came the governorship poll. Mimiko and his candidate Eyitayo became a pawn in the APC chess game. But rather than mount a spirited challenge against the shenanigans, Iroko was in bed with those who mounted a brickwall against his candidate, meeting and receiving them in his office in Akure. He soon became a mince meat for the governing APC.

The other explanation borders on a traditional belief, I mean on the concept of nemesis, which they say is at the root of Mimiko’s present situation. They say his present political status is borne of betrayal, that it’s the price to pay for allegedly betraying late governors Adebayo Adefarati and Agagu.

Mimiko has, however, denied all that in his recently-released book entitled “Mimiko’s Odyssey: A Biographer of Revelations”. In the book, he claimed his disagreement with the two late governors was over their failure to keep to the agreement that they would run for just one term and support his own governorship aspiration. Only the people privy to that alleged agreement could attest to the veracity or otherwise of that claim since Adefarati and Agagu are not alive to state their sides of the story.

At present, Mimiko seems headed for an uncertain political future. Iroko himself knows so well he is facing an unsure political future. If in doubt, just check the front page photograph of the Friday, February 24 edition of Nigerian Tribune taken as he handed over to Akeredolu on Thursday at the Alagbaka Government House.

Mimiko was staring into space, at nothingness, at the political oblivion, which seems to await him. Enough for a politician lacking in clear-cut strategy, focusing on short-term gain and now seemingly headed for the political wilderness!

Now, it seems too early in the day to assess Governor Akeredolu. But he comes unto the job with a big reputation as a legal luminary and former NBA president. At his inauguration, he enunciated lucid programmes and clear deliverables. The jury will be out soon to evaluate his performance as the weeks roll into months and years.

However, one remarkable thing about his recent inauguration is the quality of attendance at the event and what the attendance portends. Apart from the APC Chairman John Oyegun, former Interim Chairman Bisi Akande and some of the party’s governors, one key figure at the event was Asiwaju Tinubu, who put the chicanery of some APC top officials at the Ondo primary election of the party behind him in attending the event.

Asiwaju wanted to rise above the fray and be the big umbrella, the leading leader that he is. At the inauguration, he was the cynosure of all eyes, the centre of attraction.

His attendance changed the dynamics of South-west politics. It was the game-changer. Akeredolu himself rose to the occasion. He poured encomiums on Tinubu at every turn, calling him the leader deserving of all adulation. The governor asked everybody at the occasion to rise up and applaud Asiwaju.

Also, Governor Ayodele Fayose attended the ceremony. When asked by media hounds why he attended the event, being a PDP man opposed to Akeredolu’s election, the recalcitrant Osokomole said it was in furtherance of South-west regional integration devoid of political party categorization.

What does all that portend for the South-west? For me , it demonstrates that unity is key in the politics and development of the zone. The zone needs to be united because only in unity can it advance and develop its true potentials.

This is the import of Tinubu’s message in a series of tweets to APC members in Ondo. He said the state has had its elections and it was time to move on. He urged the party members, including those disenchanted from the time of the party’s primaries until now, to put aside their differences and rally round the party and Governor Akeredolu.

Don’t judge Rohr with London friendlies – Lawal

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Ex-international, Garba lawal has advised the Nigeria Football Federation not to use the results of the forthcoming international friendly matches against Burkina Faso and Senegal to judge the Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr.

The German tactician has enjoyed a perfect start to his managerial career with the senior national team, having won three out of three matches since he took the job.

Nigeria will be facing Burkina Faso and Senegal in London as part of preparation for Super Eagles’ crucial clash against South Africa in an AFCON qualifier before hosting the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo on August 28.

Lawal who has represented the Super Eagles at four editions of African Cup of Nations: 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006, said that regardless of the results against their West African neighbours, Rohr shouldn’t be judged by it.

“We must commend the Nigeria Football Federation for organizing these two grade ‘A’ international friendly matches for the senior national team,” Lawal told Soccernet.com.ng.

“Confronting teams like Burkina Faso and Senegal will definitely help to test the strength of the Super Eagles, however, the results shouldn’t be used as yardstick to judge Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr. As you know, in Nigeria all matches are important whether it’s competitive or friendly.

“As for me, I believe Rohr has done a very good job with the Super Eagles considering the fact that he has transformed our ratings in the FIFA rankings and made the team play as a team. Besides, the infusion of experience and youths such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi has really made the team strong,” he concluded.

Hayatou versus Ahmad

http://ift.tt/2mre2Oq

By Patrick Omorodion

In the history of an election for the position of President of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, none has generated interest and or furore like the 2017 edition scheduled for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on March 16.

From February 10, 1957 when CAF was founded in Khartoum, Sudan till date, seven people have been presidents of the body with two actually in acting capacity. First president was Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem from Egypt who was in power for just one year from 1957 to 1958. He was succeeded by another Egyptian, Abdul Aziz Moustafa who reigned for 10 years from 1958 to 1968.

A Sudanese, Abdel Halim Muhammad took over in 1968 and was in power till 1972 when Ethiopia’s Yidkatchew Tessema who reigned for 15 years and died in office in 1987 succeeded him.

The first acting president recorded in CAF’s history was a former president himself, Abdel Halim Muhammad who saw out the tenure of Tessema and handed over to Issa Hayatou from Cameroon in 1988. Hayatou has been president of CAF since that time except when he briefly allowed Sukelu Patel from Seychelles to act for him from 2015 to 2016. This could have been due to failing health and the 70 year ceiling placed on candidates for the position.

Insiders in CAF politics disclosed that Hayatou actually wanted to hand over to Dr Amos Adamu of Nigeria but the ban from football activities placed on the Nigerian punctured that move and Hayatou quickly appointed the Seychelles’ administrator, Patel as vice president, a non elective position. Patel acted briefly with Hayatou still in power, as I said earlier, to have a grasp of the politics of the body.

Fate however, smiled on Hayatou again when FIFA lifted the 70 years age limit for its presidents and CAF followed suit and Hayatou, I gathered, changed his mind from handing over to Patel and therefore opted to contest again, with the assurance that this 8th term would be his last.

Unfortunately for Hayatou, his fellow henchmen in FIFA, President Sepp Blatter and Vice President Jack Warner had been swept out of office following corruption charges and a new man, Gianni Infantino, whose election he worked against, came on Board.

Infantino, a new breed and younger administrator felt he wanted his own team in FIFA and so made his first surprise appointment of a woman and an African, Fatma  Samba Diouf Samoura from Senegal, the first in the history of FIFA, as Secretary General of the world football governing body.

As at the time of her appointment, Samoura, 54, was working as the UN’s Resident/Humanitarian Co-ordinator and UNDP Resident representative in Nigeria. Naturally she was linked to Pinnick and from then, the trio, as it were, have been plotting to have a change in CAF.

Who will then be able to challenge Hayatou who, through his loyalists have changed the Statutes of CAF to state that only members of the Executive Committee can vie for the position of president.

With every Executive Committee member as Hayatou’s man, and who may have benefited from CAF politics in one way or the order from the Cameroonian, it was not expected that any of them would challenge Hayatou.

Thinking that the March 16, 2017 election was going to be a walkover for him as the sole candidate that would be returned unopposed, Hayatou may have gone to sleep, lowering his guard. He didn’t know the plan of the new FIFA president Infantino.

Shockingly for Hayatou and his cronies, the President of the Madagascar Football Association, a man that goes with just one name, Ahmad, threw his cap into the race, challenging Hayatou to the seat. Nobody ever thought about him as he was, before now, a silent member of the Executive Committee.

His name didn’t ring a bell until his emergence and so people, including the Nigerians in CAF who protested to Sports and Youth Development minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung about Pinnick’s open declaration that Nigeria would vote Ahmad at the election.

The minister quickly responded that Nigeria had not taken any position on the CAF election nor on who Nigeria would send into CAF as anybody doing so was doing it in his own capacity. This is despite the fact that the NFF had said Pinnick has been nominated to contest for the CAF seat, and nomination deadline had also passed.

After a meeting with the NFF Executive Committee, the minister declared that the country would back Pinnick in his election for the CAF seat while also giving him the authority to vote, in Nigeria’s interest, for the CAF president.

Pinnick’s haters were not done yet as they have been giving reasons why he should vote Hayatou and not Ahmad, claiming that they don’t even know Ahmad and he had not visited Nigeria to campaign. Ahmad responded with his visit to Nigeria during the week where he reiterated his reasons for challenging Hayatou.

For those who say they don’t know Ahmad, he is the Chairman of the Madagascar FA. He is also an Executive Committee member of CAF. If they say he was not known before now, they should also ask themselves how famous Hayatou was when he took the mantle of leadership in 1988.

Some say Madagascar is a small country and not a football power house. How strong in football is Switzerland that it produced the disgraced FIFA president, Blatter and has also produced the incumbent, Infantino.

When those in the CAF Executive Committee were afraid to challenge Hayatou, Ahmad stood up to be counted saying “I took (my decision) after hearing some federation presidents (say they) want change.” Will that change come on March 16? Time will tell.

BAD POSTURE: Worse than a bad temper

http://ift.tt/2mSnfge

By Sola Ogundipe

Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down. Without posture and the muscles that control it, our bodies would simply fall to the ground.

A bad posture is bad news. It’s a reflection of bad grooming.Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity.

Your posture says a lot about your personality. It’s an insight into how your joints and muscles are working. It is useful to assessing your postural deviations and fixing them appropriately.

Slumping your shoulders is not good for your posture. If you don’t stand up straight, no amount of exercise will give you a good physique. Over time, poor posture takes a serious toll on your spine, shoulders, hips, and knees.

In fact, it can cause a cascade of structural flaws that lead to back and joint pain, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles, all of which limit your ability to burn fat and build strength.

But you can prevent all these problems by taking  simple precautions to fix your form, soothe your pain, and get your curves moving in the right direction

What kind of posture do you have? Do you slouch, stoop or stand straight? Your looks and confidence is directly related to your posture. Having a good posture is crucial. Don’t go about with a hunched back and imbalanced hips, or live with pain because you think it’s normal.

Living with bad posture can be dangerous. Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, foot, knee, hip, and other pain should not be ignored. By understanding proper posture, postural deviations that determine which corrective exercises will work best to improve your alignment can be determined.

Correct alignment and good posture helps prevent pain and injury, and you’ll look and feel a heck of a lot better.. Most postural deviations occur because the muscles that work to hold a joint in place are imbalanced. Generally speaking, one muscle group will be too tight and the opposing muscle group will be too loose or weak.

If you have shoulders that hunch forward too far, you are liable to have tight pec muscles that pull the shoulders forward and rotate them in toward the midline of the body. Along with tight pecs with weak back muscles and you have an imbalance that pulls the shoulder girdle away from its ideal position.

When imbalances like these occur, overactive muscles compensate for underactive muscles, which causes tension, fatigue, and discomfort. Correcting imbalances is to stretch the overactive muscles and strengthen the underactive muscles.

If you haven’t been paying attention to your posture, it’s probably a given that you have no idea how misaligned your body might be. If you’re not sure whether your posture is good or if it needs a little work, now is the best time to find out and correct it.

Maintaining good posture

Normally, we do not consciously maintain normal posture. Instead, certain muscles do it for us, and we don’t even have to think about it. Several muscle groups, including the hamstrings and large back muscles, are critically important in maintaining good posture. While the ligaments help to hold the skeleton together, these postural muscles, when functioning properly, prevent the forces of gravity from pushing us over forward. Postural muscles also maintain our posture and balance during movement.

Why good posture

Good posture is essential for good health. Poor posture is formed as a result of bad habits carried out over years and evident in many adults. But only few people have a real grasp of the importance and necessity of good posture.

Good posture helps us stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions that place the least strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities. Good and correct posture also does the following:

*Helps keep bones and joints in correct alignment so that our muscles are used correctly, decreasing the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in degenerative arthritis and joint pain.

*Reduces the stress on ligaments holding the spinal joints together, minimizing the likelihood of injury.

*Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue.

*Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.

To maintain proper posture, you need to have adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion in the spine and other body regions, as well as efficient postural muscles that are balanced on both sides of the spine. In addition, you must recognize your postural habits at home and in the workplace and work to correct them, if necessary.

Consequences of bad posture

Poor posture can lead to excessive strain on postural muscles and may even cause them to relax, when held in certain positions for long periods of time. For example, you can typically see this in people who bend forward at the waist for a prolonged time in the workplace. Their postural muscles are more prone to injury and back pain.

Causes of bad posture

Most commonly, stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, abnormally tight muscles, and high-heeled shoes.  In addition, decreased flexibility, a poor work environment, incorrect working posture, and unhealthy sitting and standing habits can also contribute to poor body positioning.

Correcting bad posture

Long-standing postural problems will typically take longer to address than short-lived ones, as often the joints have adapted to your long-standing poor posture. Conscious awareness of your own posture and knowing what posture is correct will help you consciously correct yourself. With much practice, the correct posture for standing, sitting, and lying down will gradually replace your old posture. This, in turn, will help you move toward a better and healthier body position.

How to assess your posture

Wear something form-fitting and have someone take two full-body photos—one from the front, one from the side. Relax your muscles and stand as tall as you can, feet hip-width apart.

* Look at your ear. If it’s in front of the midpoint of your shoulder, your head is too far forward.

* Can you see your shoulder blade? That means your back is too rounded.

* If your hips tilt forward and you have a belly pooch (even if you don’t have an ounce of fat on your body) and your lower spine is arched significantly, this means you have an anterior pelvic tilt.

*Look at your shoulders. One shouldn’t appear higher than the other.

* Check out your kneecaps. Do they point inward, causing your knees to touch when your legs are straightened?

* See if you’re duck-footed. Your toes will point outward more than 10 degrees.

How to sit properly

Keep your feet on the floor or on a footrest, if they don’t reach the floor. Don’t cross your legs. Your ankles should be in front of your knees. Keep a small gap between the back of your knees and the front of your seat.

Your knees should be at or below the level of your hips. Adjust the backrest of your chair to support your low- and mid-back or use a back support. Relax your shoulders and keep your forearms parallel to the ground. Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time.

How to stand properly

Bear your weight primarily on the balls of your feet. Keep your knees slightly bent. Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart. Let your arms hang naturally down the sides of the body. Stand straight and tall with your shoulders pulled backward. Tuck your stomach in.

Keep your head level. Your earlobes should be in line with your shoulders. Do not push your head forward, backward, or to the side. Shift your weight from your toes to your heels, or one foot to the other, if you have to stand for a long time.

Proper lying position

Find the mattress that is right for you. A firm mattress is generally recommended, however some people find that softer mattresses reduce their back pain. Your comfort is important.

Sleep with a pillow. Special pillows are available to help with postural problems resulting from a poor sleeping position.

Avoid sleeping on your stomach. Sleeping on your side or back is more often helpful for back pain. If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your legs. If you sleep on your back, keep a pillow under your knees. Keep at it and soon you’ll notice some excellent results: You’ll feel better, look better, and lift heavier!

Sleeping on Duty

http://ift.tt/2mrmEVv

By Janet Adetu

Are you overwhelmed, exhausted or even sleep deprived?

At times, you feel there is not enough hours in the day to accomplish all you set out to do. You may have to take work home meaning the day never ends as work continues endlessly. Stringent deadlines and work overload are major reasons why when working you still do not know when to draw the line and rest.

It could also be the nature of your job that requires long work hours at a stretch, that if care is not taken you will begin to wear yourself out slowly and gradually. It is situations like this that make you sneak a power nap or two at unsolicited times. The body simply shuts down when it has had enough, after all we are only human.

The main issue here however is when you take that nap at the wrong time and wrong place, especially while on duty.

The implications of sleeping while on duty or while on the job can be major. I remember visiting an office and spending 10 – 15 minutes waiting to drive in. I was sure nobody was in the office after several attempts at registering our presence at the gate.

Finally after making calls to the client we discovered the security man did not open the gate because ….yes you guessed right he was fast asleep while on duty. Can you imagine the security risk that this one staff poses on the entire company due to negligence?

As an employer, what do you do if you catch your employee sleeping on duty?

Are there policies in your organization around official naptimes during break or is it strictly prohibited? Is this a punishable offence?

Imagine walking into your office reception and finding the receptionist dozing off, what impression will you have of your company and your staff sleeping too? This is the very act that can sabotage your companies professional outlook.

As an employee suffering from insomnia at night, only to doze off in the office in the morning. You compromise your position, you jeopardize your role, and position yourself for poor assessment where and when it matters most.

This is not a practice that should be encouraged as it can change the entire dynamics of your organization. Many job roles fall victim of sleeping on duty like uniformed personnel, the pilot, bus driver, medical doctors, surgeons and the likes.

Sadly I once went to the hospital in the evening and the consultant on duty asleep. I understand that medical practioners are allowed to take a nap when not on dity but to my surpise this young doctor was caught lying on the patient bed with a bedsheet on him too. This story gets longer but for another day.
Possible reasons why you may sleep on duty

There are genuine reasons why someone may be tired and may want to sleep. Though highlighted here for reference they are strictly not excuses for sleeping while on duty. Permission must be sought to leave the premises of the organization to take care of the issues causing the sleepiness at once. Let me mention a few of the common reasons:
i. Over exhaustion
ii. Poor diet
iii. Lack of exercise
iv. Current Medication
v. Medical condition
vi. Poor time management
vii. Alcohol
viii. Sleepiness nights
ix. Burnt out overtime
x. Travel time zone

Step to overcome sleeping on duty

Sleeping Policy
This is easily overlooked in many offices as it is not expected that this will occur. A policy to address this within offices must clearly state what is acceptable and what is not. The reputation and image of the organization is at stake here in positioning your brand. Include the policy in the staff handbook.

Consequences
Depending on the staff category and the nature of the job, the magnitude of the grievance must be stated upfront. It could be from a stern warning, to suspension without pay or outright dismissal. Let this be communicated loud and clear and take no prisoners.

Display Company Core values
Many companies have their objectives and core values on paper assuming that the employees are in tune with this and follow the same values. It is important that everyone is on the same page and personal values are in sync with corporate values. It is good practice to publicly display company core values in and around the office premises.
Register your state of health

As an employee, these things do happen, if you can avoid it then do your best to do so. If this is a regular occurrence, then it calls for medical attention. Where you truly feeling too worn out to work it goes without saying do not drive operate machinery or engage in any activity that is dangerous to others.

Medication that influences sleep must never be taken while on the job, instead sick leave is required. It is indeed better to be safe than to be sorry for the sake of everyone. It is your duty to abide by all laid down rules.
Have you ever slept while on duty, what do you think was the cause?

Chief Okoi Obono-Obla

The Federal Government has accused the Cross River State government of misappropriating N19billion, which was given to it as bailout fund to pay salaries and pension.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Prosecutions, Okoi Obono-Obla, told The Guardian on Tuesday that “the president had bailed the state out twice but the funds were not judiciously used?”

He explained that the Federal Government gave N7.8billion to the state in July 2016 and another N11.5billion in December to settle all outstanding indebtedness.

Obono-Obla asked: “Why has Governor Benedict Ayade not paid civil servants and pensioners. Why are the residents not asking questions if we must clamour for true federalism?”

Also, the National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ntufam Hilliard Eta, urged the governor to explain how the bailout fund and the Paris Club debt were spent, since they were loans.

He appealed to the governor to invest in infrastructure that would benefit the masses, adding that the state’s position during the public hearing organised by the Senate, showed lack of accountability.

The state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), John Ushie, had, last week, threatened to go on strike to compel the governor to pay them their entitlements.

But, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Christian Ita denied that the fund was misappropriated. He said: “What Obono-Obla is doing is personal pursuit of a narrow interest. The delay at the local councils level had to do with technical hitches in the process of bio-verification.

“We are aware that while some people have not earned their salaries for up to six months, others had been paid up to March 2016. So it is not a question of lack of money but that of trying to address the technical challenges.

“Government had raised an inter-ministerial panel, mandating commissioners to go to local councils to supervise the exercise. As soon as it is completed, everybody would be paid,” he said.
