Nutritionist lists health benefits of cinnamon

A nutritionist and biochemist, Dr Ochuko Erikainure, on Sunday said that the consumption of cinnamon could be of health benefits and slow aging processes in man.

Erukainure, also a senior research officer at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO), Oshodi, Lagos, also told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that cinnamon is amongst the world’s most popular spices with high health benefits aside its use as a seasoning.

Erukainure said that other health benefits of cinnamon include: ability to reduce many forms of oxidative stress in human beings, ability to limit nitric oxide build up in the blood and lipid (fat).

“Stronger doses of cinnamon are also extremely beneficial for improving heart disease risk and cutting risk of diabetes, cancer, and neuro-degenerative diseases.

“Cinnamon lowers swelling and inflammation; it can be beneficial in pain management, with studies showing that it helps to relive muscle soreness, severity of allergic reactions.

“The extracts found in cinnamon are protective against bacteria living in the oral microflora that could cause bad breath, tooth-decay or mouth infections.

“Its bark is a common ingredient in the production of many products such as toothpaste, mouthwash and perfume,’’ he said.

Erukainure added that cinnamon is very rich in essential oil with reported antioxidant activities.

“The different antioxidants present in cinnamon help to reduce a multitude of symptoms and diseases because they are free radical scavengers (a substance that prevents or slows the breakdown of another substance by oxygen).

“It is also rich in flavonoids and phenolics which are responsible for its biological activities such as hypoglycemic, anti-inflammation and immuno-modulation,’ he said.

According to the researcher, “Cinnamon has been identified to have insulin-like activity in experimented animals.

“It is also a potent anti-diabetic source, which can be attributed to its chemical constituents.

The Acting Director General of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs. Yetunde Oni, has urged indigenous pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria to uphold best practices in the course of their endeavours to avoid the wrath of the agency. 

Oni, who said the agency under her watch would not embark on witch-hunt of companies that fall within the purview of its jurisdiction, however, warned that no rule would be bent for any erring companies or corporate body. 

Oni, who spoke yesterday in Ilorin during a routine courtesy visit on managements of Peace Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, added that the agency would not rest on its oars until all Nigerian drugs manufacturing companies attain international status. 

She stated: “We wish to let you all know that we are here to do our utmost for the nation and her people. “We will, therefore, challenge you managers of pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria to continually strive towards meeting World Health Organisation’s (WHO) pre-qualification criteria.” 

She commended the Ilorin-based pharmaceutical firm for its choice by the Kwara State government to produce drugs used during the recent “Roll Back Malaria” campaign in the state. 

Oni, while recounting the success story of the firm during the exercise, noted that if it could measure up to the expected standard at the state level, its consideration for national and international assignments is imminent. 

She pledged the readiness of the agency to give all the needed technical supports to drug manufacturing companies in the country towards making them compete favourably with contemporaries globally. 

Earlier, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Samuel Akinlaja, extolled the virtues of the Oni-led NAFDAC in ensuring quality control of foods and drugs in the country. 

Akinlaja, while attesting to the doggedness of the state Director of the agency, Mrs. Rose Ajayi, in effective monitoring of pharmaceutical companies in the state, disclosed that the development has brought out the best in the production capacities of his company.

CBN explains why naira is appreciating

The Acting Director of Corporate Communications, CBN, Isaac Okorafor, has said the naira’s recent appreciation was a result of calculated moves that were based on intelligence reports, as well as the need to effect the right policies at the appropriate time.

Substantiating his claims, he said that when CBN placed $500 million in the market last week, only $370 million was taken, which was the real demand and it also placed another $230 million, while only $221 million was taken.

He said that with forex reserves now at near $30 billion, the apex bank had decided to do the intervention as it is more comfortable, unlike the level it was before now, which didn’t allow the bank to feel comfortable enough to do a kind of intervention needed when required.

“The CBN has done a lot of intelligence on the markets and we came to the realisation that much of what was driving the demand in the bureaux de change and the parallel market was mere bubble and speculation.

“We reasoned that since there was pressure on those two segments from people seeking personal travel allowance, medicals and tuition if we successfully address that bit, the pressure would come down. We intervened in the market and the market reacted positively and the naira started gaining strength,” he said.

Barcelona moved top of La Liga on the night Luis Enrique confirmed he will not continue as coach next season as Gareth Bale was sent-off in Real Madrid’s thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Las Palmas.

Enrique announced his decision to step down after Barca’s 6-1 rout of Sporting Gijon earlier on Wednesday which leaves Barcelona a point clear at the top, but having played a game more.

Bale’s first ever red card in a Madrid shirt look set to cost the European champions dear as Las Palmas led the 10 men 3-1 with just three minutes remaining.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice in an incredible finale to salvage a point.

Madrid’s slip up, though, means a third title in as many seasons for Enrique is back in Barcelona’s hands with the two sides still to meet in April.

“I will not be the coach of Barcelona next season,” Enrique said, citing the need for a break from the pressures at the Camp Nou as the reason for his decision.

“It is a difficult, measured and well thought out decision and I think I have to be loyal to what I think.”

After Barca had swept aside Sporting with all of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar on the scoresheet, Madrid also looked in for an easy night at the Bernabeu when Isco slotted home the opener after just eight minutes.

However, Real were in front for just two minutes before Tana spun Sergio Ramos on the edge of the box before firing high past Keylor Navas.

The game turned just three minutes into the second-half when Bale uncharacteristically lost his temper after a late challenge from Jonathan Viera.

The Welshman pushed Viera to the ground and was punished with a red card.

“He has apologised. He is not happy with the sending-off,” said Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

Things got much worse for the hosts in the next 10 minutes as, firstly, Viera converted from the penalty spot after a clear handball by Ramos inside the area.

And then a huge mistake from Navas allowed Kevin-Prince Boateng to knock the ball past the Costa Rican as he flew from his goal before rolling the ball into an empty net.

Ronaldo to the rescue 
However, despite their numerical disadvantage, Madrid laid seige to the Las Palmas goal and were rewarded in the final minutes. Ronaldo fired a penalty into the top corner after Dani Castellano was penalised for handball. And the World Player of the Year then bulleted home a header from a corner a minute from time to salvage a point.

“We are not leaders, but the league is still open and we are not going to give up,” added Zidane.

Barca enjoyed a far more comfortable night against a Sporting side still mired in the relegation zone. Messi netted his 36th goal in as many games this season in unusual fashion on his 500th start before Juan Rodriguez’s own goal made it 2-0.

The visitors were handed a brief lifeline when Carlos Castro pulled a goal back. However, there was no time for any Barca doubts to seep in as Suarez’s spectacular volley restored their two-goal lead.

Paco Alcacer was given a rare chance for the second half as he replaced Suarez and took just four minutes to make it 4-1 when he slotted home from Messi’s pass.

Messi also hit the bar from a trademark free-kick before the five-time World Player of the Year was rested for the final half hour as he was replaced by Andre Gomes.

Neymar took advantage of the Argentine’s absence to take over free-kick duty and he produced a stunning strike of his own into the top corner for his first La Liga goal at the Camp Nou this season.

Ivan Rakitic completed the scoring when he lashed into the roof of the net three minutes from time.

‘N15.1m ransom was paid to Lagos monarch’s kidnappers’

A Prosecuting witness in the ongoing trial of the kidnapping of the traditional ruler of Iba in Lagos State, Oba Goriola Oseni, yesterday told the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, that a ransom of N15.1 million was paid to the kidnappers.

Sgt. Dele-Ojo Oduayo, an Investigation Police Officer (IPO) attached to the Inspector-General of Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja, who was assigned to investigate the case, said this while testifying during yesterday’s proceedings.

The IPO said that the family members of the monarch had paid the ransom money to the kidnappers before he was moved to Lagos to investigate the case.

He also said that the monarch’s family members were about to pay another ransom before his team swung into action.At the resumed trial of the case yesterday, Mr. Jide Martins, an Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, introduced Oduayo as the seventh prosecution witness.

The IPO, however, told the court that the statements of all the accused and the video recordings were taken during their interrogations.

After the testimony of the witness, the prosecutor tendered the statements of the accused, the video recordings, the photographs of the scene of crime and the N200,000 cash found with the first accused.

The accused counsel, Mr. S. W. Baidi, Anthony Onwueze, and G. O. Egwuaroje all objected to the admissibility of the documents.Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, however, admitted the other documents in evidence but said that the video recordings must be viewed in the open court to ascertain its contents before it would be admitted.She adjourned the case till March 3 for continuation of trial.
