Jaiz Takaful Insurance to commence in 3 states

ABUJA- THE Jaiz Foundation has expressed readiness to commence Islamic ‘Takaful’ Insurance in Kaduna, Kano, and Lagos States with head office in Abuja.

This was disclosed by the Chairman, Jaiz Takaful Insurance Plc, Dr Umaru Abdul Mutallab, during final preparation by the Foundation, which held one- week induction training for staff of the organisation that will be deployed to the states to commence its pilot operation.

Mutallab who also doubles as Chairman, Jaiz Bank Plc, said should take advantage of the new insurance concept.

He further explained that the insurance products give equal opportunity for customers to be owners of the company as well and was for everybody.

He said: “The name Islamic notwithstanding, it is for all Nigerians, provided they adhere to the principle of Sharia. Individuals, groups and business people should take advantage of this rare opportunity. The premium you pay remains there for you as investment, if it do not suffer loss.”

Also speaking on the operation of the insurance policy of Jaiz Takaful, the Managing Director, Jaiz Islamic Takaful Insurance, Momodou Musa Joof, said the company shares profit by 80 per cent to its participants who have not suffered losses.

According to Joof, the staff that were being trained will be deployed to states to sell Islamic Takaful Insurance support to potential customers.

“They have been into conventional insurance but now we are introducing Takaful or Islamic Insurance, which is basically Sharia compliant.

“It insures anything that is ethical and at the end of the year, the profit that the company generates, 80 per cent of it will be distributed to the clients or participants who did not suffer losses in the cause of the year.

“In the meantime, those who suffer losses would have been paid first before the distribution of profit. The element which goes to the needy, which is called Zakat is also distributed before profit is shared.

“Takaful is coming as a scheme for all and the good thing in Takaful is that, if you don’t suffer loss, your contribution become an automatic investment. For the less privileged who don’t have what to insure, if the company is successful in business, one day we will reach out to you in zakat.”

Dignitaries at the occasion include the Vice Chancellor, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Prof Muhammed Nasirudeen Maiturare, who is also a member of the advisory council.

Explosion kills 3 suicide bombers; destroys fuel tankers in Maiduguri

Three suspected suicide bombers have been killed after one of them detonated an explosive device close to stationed fuel tankers early this morning along Damboa Road Maiduguri.

Two other fuel Tankers were also burnt as a result of the explosion.

Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North-East, Abdulkadir Ibrahim disclosed that the bodies of the three suicide bombers have been evacuated by emergency workers.

He said: “The fire has been brought under control while casualty evacuation has been concluded.”

Sources said no other person was affected in the explosion.

Community wants OBJ’s Presidential Library land back

THE land hosting the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, OOPL, is now a subject of litigation as an Ogun State High court restrained the trustees, the government and other defendants from destroying the claimants’ shrines on the land until the determination of the suit.

The Plaintiffs, Ijeun-Lukosi Community of Abeokuta, Ogun State who are the alleged owners of the property in which the library and other private properties are located, are now asking the court to return their land to them. Plaintiffs in the matter include Chiefs Benjamin Ogunbona, Akeem Taoreed, Gbenga Amos, Dele Taiwo, Musiliu Oyegunle on behalf of Ijeun Lukosi community of Ogun state.

The suit is against the Governor of Ogun State, D.G. Bureau of land and survey, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, OOPL ventures Ltd, the incorporated trustee of OOPL foundation, DLK Aluminium Products Ltd, Beneficiaries of the Estate of late Chief Sesan Soluade, Chief Lola Oyerinde and Alhaji Alli Ajibode.

Reversion of the land

Others are Dr. Kunle Salako,  Dr. Adeleke Adedoyin, Chief Yomi Majekodunmi, Alhaji Layi Shobayo, Inspector General of Police and the state commissioner of Police.

Already the court on January 10 granted an order restraining the defendants from destroying the shrines located on the land. The entire Ijeun-Lukosi community are praying the court for the reversion of the land to the community as the bona-fide owners, since it’s no longer used for the original purpose of the acquisition but shared to private individuals.

In a 50-paragraph affidavit in support of the motion, the Baale of Ijeun-Lukosi Community, Chief Benjamin Ogunbona, claimed that Ogun State Government compulsorily acquired the land in 1976 for the purpose of building the state secretariat complex, but did not use it for that purpose but re-allocated it to individuals for private use.

According to him, more than 100 individuals have now erected private properties on the land among whom were Obasanjo’s Presidential Library, Dr. Kunle Salako (former SSG, Ogun State); Dr. Adeleke Adedoyin, Chief Yomi Majekodunmi among others.

The Presidential Library was said to be a private property of Obasanjo as contained in a letter written to the community by the National Library of Nigeria,February 2, 2016 and signed by the Secretary to the board/Legal adviser, Alhaji Aminu Ojaj.

Ogunbona noted that after  pressure was mounted on the government, it excised 33.253 hectares out of the land to the community in 2011, but did not pay any compensation to the people of Ijeun-Lukosi community for the compulsory acquisition of their land as provided by law.

He said: “Our land measured approximately 178.89 hectares, which amounted to 444.52 Acres of land from time immemorial and we have exercised undisturbed act of ownership on same without let or hindrance from any quarters until 1976 when the newly created Ogun State government compulsorily acquired part  of our land.”

The government in its response through Mr. Omilana Korede of the Bureau of Lands and Survey, confirmed the acquisition of the land by Ogun State Government in 1976.

He, however, argued that the land was validly acquired, crops properly enumerated and the compensation deposited with the Bureau of Lands and Survey a long time ago.

Panel of enquiry

He also averred that the 38.253 hectares the community said was returned to them in 2011 had also been cancelled by a panel of enquiry set up by the current government.

His 12-paragraph affidavit read in part: “That sometimes in 1976, the Ogun State government acquired a large area of land which forms part of the large expanse of land measuring 3, 674 hectares for public purpose; to construct the State Secretariat.

“That the land was validly acquired by the enabling law. That copies of notice of acquisition were served on the affected land owners and villagers and where they were hostile, the notices were posted on conspicuous objects like trees and rocks.

“That the 38.253 hectares that was claimed by the defendants to have been released to them  has since been cancelled by the Panel of enquiry on Lands headed by Justice Abiodun Akinyemi.”

The matter has been adjourned to the 23rd of March, 2017.

Solution: You can try switching off and switching on on your Bluetooth, if it is malfunctioning. If it still doesn’t work, go to Settings> Apps> Systems Apps> Select Bluetooth Share> Clear Cache. The steps vary for different smartphone brands, but the important thing to know is that ‘Bluetooth Share’ is a system app and should be sourced from the system apps of your phone.

For interference issues, either switch off the source of interference or take your device away from it. For pairing issues, you should make sure your device’s discoverable mood is on, get away from or power down likely interferers and make sure the devices you are attempting to pair are in close proximity to each other. If these don’t work, you can try powering your phone off and back on and limiting the data shared between the devices, before trying the above suggestions again.

Cracked Screen or Immersion in Water

We all know water and electronics are not a good mix, but unfortunately accidents happen and devices suddenly get immersed in water or have a hard impact with the floor when they mistakenly slip.

MicroSD Card Not Working On Your Smartphone

There are a lot of microSD cards in the market, but unfortunately not all of them will work on your smartphone. That can be frustrating.

Solution: There are mostly two types of microSD cards that you’ll come across – SDHC and SDXC. Before you buy any of them, you need to confirm the one which your smartphone supports. When President Donald Trump took office last month heading one of the most vocally anti-abortion administrations in modern US history, it was clear that one of his first targets would be Planned Parenthood.

He has promised to end federal funding for the non-profit health care group with some 650 centers across the United States offering abortions and other health services — a longtime goal of Republican politicians even though Planned Parenthood says only around three percent of the services it provides are abortion-related.

Shelby Weathers voices a common response to the threat.

“As a woman, I feel almost attacked,” the 18-year-old student says at one of the group’s centers in Phoenix, Arizona, where she has access to contraception.

“It’s really discouraging to hear people are trying to take away access to health care.”

In a clear sign of the administration’s position, Vice President Mike Pence recently headlined an anti-abortion march in Washington, where he told the gathering that Trump’s election in November proved that “life is winning in America.”

Trump himself told the marchers in a tweet that they had his “full support.”

– ‘Devastating for women –
Samaria has just undergone an abortion at the Phoenix clinic. A single mother of two who opposed abortions for many years, she says she is in an unstable relationship and wasn’t ready for a third child.

“I felt so depressed,” she said with tears in her eyes. “You have to say goodbye to someone you don’t even know.”

Deanna Wambach — the head doctor for Planned Parenthood in Arizona — wears green hospital scrubs as she prepares to examine a patient in a room equipped with a gynecological examination chair and a model representing the female reproductive system.

She’s worried. If the new administration goes through with its promise to defund Planned Parenthood, many of the patients the group serves — typically low- to middle-income Americans — will no longer have access to health services.

The group, which serves some 2.5 million men and women a year, relies on federal funding for more than 40 percent of its operating budget.

“That would be devastating for women,” she says. “In Arizona alone, we serve over 33,000 women.”

Others express outrage.

Gabrielle Goodrick, who practices abortions at a private clinic in Phoenix, denounced the threat to defund Planned Parenthood as nothing but a “smokescreen,” given that it’s been illegal to use federal funds for abortions for decades.

“The defunding never had anything to do with abortion,” she said. “It’s an attack on all abortion providers to demonize them.”

“They’re defunding pap smears, breast cancer and STD (sexually transmitted disease) screenings,” she added.

The days following Trump’s election saw a 900 percent increase in patients seeking contraception, Wambach says.

She now fears a spike in unwanted pregnancies, and stresses that women who want abortions will find ways to get them.

– ‘Major benefit for women’ –
Making it harder for women to have access to contraception or abortion will only lead to unwanted pregnancies or late-term abortions that can cost up to $3,500 dollars, Goodrick says.

In Arizona, which has some of the toughest legislations in the country, patients must foot the cost.

As a result, many desperate women are taking more risks.

“We definitely have seen patients ordering pills online,” Goodrick said. “We’ve had patients we can’t quite tell what happened but when you check their uterus, it seems a mess.”

Nevertheless, pro-life groups such as the Susan B. Anthony List insist that cutting federal funds for Planned Parenthood would be “a major benefit to women’s health.”

Mallory Quigley, a spokeswoman for the group, says the funds could be reallocated to more than 13,000 community health centers that provide the same services — but not abortions.

But experts point out that existing health centers will be unable to absorb Planned Parenthood patients.

In rural regions where cuts in subsidies and tougher legislation have led to the shutdown of Planned Parenthood centers, the authorities say they have seen a big uptick in sexually transmitted diseases even though other factors, such as drug addiction, also play a role.

Meanwhile, the immediate threat to defund Planned Parenthood is just an opening salvo in the battle against abortion.

If Trump’s current nominee to the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch — a judge known for his pro-life stance — is confirmed, a majority of conservative justices could threaten the constitutional right to abortions itself.

Two suspected female suicide bombers arrested in Maiduguri (Read full details)

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Borno Command, on Tuesday intercepted two female suicide bombers, who tried to ram into motorists at the NNPC Mega Station along Damboa Road, Maiduguri.

The Commandant of the corps, Ibrahim Abdullahi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Tuesday that the incident occurred at about 6.45 a.m.

“Our personnel at the NNPC station intercepted two female suicide bombers, who were targeting motorists on the long queue at the NNPC mega petrol station at about 6.45 a.m.

“One of the bombers got scared and threw her bomb and was instantly arrested, while the other one started running after people with her explosive but luckily, she was shot on the leg by our personnel after he chased her to a safe place.

“We have deployed our Anti-Bomb Squad to the area,” Abdullahi said.

The commandant said that the few insurgents remaining were looking for soft targets where they could cause havoc and appealed to all residents in Borno to be on alert and vigilant.
