LAGOS—The ongoing crisis between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, assumed a tragic dimension yesterday, with the death of a member of one of the warring factions at Kola area of Alagbado, Lagos.
This is just as indication emerged, yesterday, that the two persons, who were severely injured from the weekend clash at Abule-Egba between same warring factions, had died, bringing the number of persons killed in the feud to three.
Vanguard was informed that fight broke out following a protest by tricycle operators popularly known as Keke Marwa, to resist alleged extortion by the NURTW. The operators accused the union of increasing daily levies, lamenting that they were not able to meet up with the weekly payment to owners of the tricycles.
Vanguard gathered that the operators decided to stop the payment, announcing that they would want to be on their own. But this resulted in a fight, weekend, at Abule-Egba and escalated to Alagbado yesterday, where dangerous weapons were freely used.
The fight disrupted commercial activities and vehicular movements, until the arrival of policemen.
Three persons, according to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, had been arrested in connection with the fracas at Alagbado.
She said the command boss, Fatai Owoseni, visited the scene with some senior police officers yesterday, adding that he (Owoseni) deployed anti-riot policemen and those from the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, to the scene to maintain peace.
Those arrested, according to her, would be charged to court, adding that normalcy had since returned to the troubled zone.
