LAGOS—Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet, weekend, signed Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, with the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation, BATNF, an independent charitable organization incorporated in Nigeria.
The MoU shall be for an initial period of three (3) calendar years effective from the date of final execution and may be renewed thereafter on terms mutually agreed upon by the parties.
The overall objective of the MoU is to establish a collaborative relationship between NiMet and BATNF to jointly assist smallholder farmers to build productive capacity to enable them transit from subsistence to commercial agriculture.
Speaking at the ceremony, the new Director General of NIMET, Professor Sani Abubakar Marshi, who was accompanied by the outgoing Director General of NIMET, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, said: “We at NIMET are extremely happy with the relationship with British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation. We will give you the necessary support. We are in a transition.”
According to the Executive Director of BATNF, Mrs. Oluaseyi Ashade, the objective of the partnership is to enable NiMet “ provide weather information including the likely period of dry spell and locations of likely flash flood occurrences to farmers who are grossly dependent on rain fed agriculture.”
