Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Saturday said he would build on the legacies of late former governor of defunct Bendel state, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia, to transform the state.

He made the pledge when he visited the family of the late former governor to condole with the members in Benin.

Obaseki, who was represented by his the Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu, said that Ogbemudia did great work in different spheres of development in the state.

He described Ogbemudia as a great man, who left a good footprint for Edo and Delta states to emulate in terms of development.

Obaseki prayed that God should give the family the fortitude to bear the loss, adding that the state would continue to remember the former governor for good.

In his response, Mr Samuel Ogbemudia, the eldest son of the deceased, lauded the state government for its support during their late father’s sick period.

He appealed to the government to continue to stand by the family at all times.

The late Ogbemudia, who was military and civilian governor of the defunct Bendel state at different times, died on Thursday night in Lagos, at 84.

Pensioners

Hashimu Gital, Chairman, Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said that the state government owed retirees N15 billion in accumulated gratuity.

Gital said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Sunday. “The problem here is the accumulated gratuity amounting to almost N15 billion.

“We have achieved that of normalising payment of salaries where government does not owe any salary arrears in Bauchi State but the issue of gratuity remains a problem.

“We are always knocking at the door of the state government and there is assurance that government is also making efforts to ensure that the outstanding gratuity is paid,’’ the NLC chairman said.

He refuted insinuations that retirees in the state were been owed pension arrears.

Gital said that the state government was also making efforts to actualise the contributory pension scheme in the state.

He commended the state government for initiating another round of screening exercise for the workforce to further eliminate ghost workers in its payroll.

“As stakeholders in the affairs of the state, our concern as organised labour is to ensure sustainability of the payment of salaries,’’ the NLC chairman said.

Kim killing suspect was paid $90 to take part in ‘TV prank’…Read full details

An Indonesian woman being held over the assassination of Kim Jong-Nam said Saturday she had been paid just RM400 ($90) for taking part in what she thought was a TV prank show, a senior diplomat reportedly told media.

Siti Aisyah, who was arrested soon after the half-brother of the North Korean leader was killed on February 13 with a lethal nerve agent, added she believed she was handling a liquid like “baby oil”, Indonesia’s deputy ambassador to Malaysia Andreano Erwin said according to reports.

Two women are seen shoving something into Kim’s face in leaked CCTV footage from Kuala Lumpur airport. He later suffered a seizure and was dead before he reached hospital.

Malaysia revealed Friday the 45-year-old was assassinated with a lethal nerve agent manufactured for chemical warfare and listed by the UN as a weapon of mass destruction.

Siti, 25, “only said in general that somebody asked her to do this activity”, according to Erwin, who was granted consular access to Siti in Kuala Lumpur Saturday.

The senior diplomat added it was too early to say what charges may be brought against her.

Another female suspect, Doan Thi Huong, 28, is also in custody over the murder, but Erwin said Siti had told Indonesian consular staff she did not know her.

Malaysian police have said one of the women arrested after the attack fell ill in custody, adding she had been vomiting.

However, Erwin said Siti was physically healthy.

– ‘Blatant violation’ –

The news Friday that lethal VX nerve agent was used in the attack brought condemnation from South Korea, which has pointed the finger at the North over Kim’s death.

Seoul slammed the use of the toxin as a “blatant violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and other international norms”.

The fallout from the attack continued after US media reported unofficial talks in New York between North Korean and former American officials had been cancelled.

Earlier Saturday Malaysian police told the public they would do everything possible to ensure there was no risk from the lethal VX nerve agent used to assassinate Kim Jong-Nam.

People were worried about the use of the highly toxic agent, state police chief Abdul Samah Mat said.

“We are taking action on this to be really sure,” Abdul Samah said.

“We are working closely with our counterparts from our chemistry department, forensics and the team from the nuclear atomic agency in Malaysia.”

He added: “We want to make it clear to the public if there is any effects … which could affect the health of the people.”

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said Friday experts would sweep the airport terminal where the attack took place for traces of the toxin as well as other locations the two female suspects visited.

Detectives are also holding a North Korean man but want to speak to seven other North Koreans, four of whom are thought to have fled to Pyongyang.

One man wanted for questioning, who is believed to still be in Malaysia, is senior North Korean embassy official Hyon Kwang Song, who enjoys diplomatic immunity.

However, Abdul Samah insisted under Malaysian law “we have the right to call anybody for statements for our investigations”.

He added if wanted people do not co-operate, police would issue a notice “compelling” them to come forward.

Abdul Samah also told reporters an investigation in connection to the murder was ongoing at an apartment complex in Kuala Lumpur but declined to comment on local media reports chemicals has been seized from the address.

No next-of-kin have yet come forward to formally identify the body of the 45-year-old victim or provide a DNA sample, but Abdul Samah said authorities would give relatives a “reasonable” amount of time to do so.

Euro disaster as AC Milan sink to third straight loss…See full details

Luis Muriel’s penalty gave Sampdoria a shock 1-0 win over AC Milan 1-0 on Sunday to compound the Rossoneri’s hopes of a return to European football.

Milan, slipping to their third consecutive league defeat, remain in eighth place but are now 14 points behind leaders Juventus, who have two games in hand.

More importantly, Milan sit 10 points behind Roma in the third and last Champions League qualifying spot. The capital side can stretch their lead with a win over Fiorentina on Tuesday.

AC Milan coach Vincenzo Montella had raised hopes this season that the seven-time European champions could battle for a Champions League spot.

Milan last graced the competition in 2014 when they lost 5-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid in the last 16.

But injuries to midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura, who is out for the season, and defenders Mattia Di Sciglio and Luca Antonelli forced Montella into deploying a largely makeshift back four.

Alessio Romagnoli and Juraj Kucka were hauled back into defence from midfield and for the first half Milan’s defence held firm against incursions by Muriel and Andrea Bertolacci.

Former Everton striker Gerard Deulofeu spurned a great chance to break the deadlock after the restart when he fired on to the far post from seven yards out.

Milan striker Carlos Bacca had desperate penalty appeals waved away when he tumbled after a nudge by Matias Silvestre in the area.

But when Gabriel Paletta hauled dwn Fabio Quagliarella on the counter, the referee pointed immediately to the spot. Muriel sent goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way to give Samp a 70th minute lead.

Milan should have levelled in the final minutes but late substitute Gianluca Lapadula fired straght at Emiliano Viviano after being sent clear.

It was Sampdoria’s first win over Milan since 2012 but the Genoa side have now claimed to major scalps in succession having edged Roma 3-2 last week when Muriel hit a 73rd minute winner.

Samp moved up two places to 10th at 21 points off the pace.

Juventus, bidding for a record sixth consecutive title, saw their lead cut to three points when Napoli routed Bologna 7-1 on Saturday to move up to second place.

But the Turin giants can pull six points clear with a win against Inter later Sunday.

EFCC loses bid to freeze Fayose’s accounts (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2jQouwG

Efforts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze the personal accounts of Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose with the Zenith Bank Plc were rebuffed by the Federal High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti that dismissed the anti-graft agency’s application for “lack of merit”.

The EFCC had on December 15, 2016, filed an application for a stay of execution of the court’s judgement of December 13, last year on the matter that the agency was erred in frozen Fayose’s account with the bank.

Dismissing the application on Tuesday, the presiding judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo said that the EFCC had already filed an application at the Appeal Court challenging the judgement of the court.

He said that” once a judgment is being executed, you cannot stay the execution again”.

He, therefore, referred to Section 308 of the 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The judge said that there were no substantial points raised in the affidavit for the court to condemn the judgment already delivered by the court.

The Judge, therefore, dismissed the application saying it lacks merit.

“I am finally home”, King Mohammed VI said Tuesday as the African Union readmitted Morocco after a 33-year absence, deferring the issue of Western Sahara for another day.

Morocco’s return came a day after 39 of the AU’s 54 member states agreed to allow it back in the fold, despite stiff resistance from countries such as South Africa and Algeria over the status of the disputed former Spanish colony.

Faced with the AU’s decision, Western Sahara officials appeared to accept the new reality and cast it in a positive light, saying AU membership might help speed up efforts to end a protracted conflict.

“It is a beautiful day when one returns home after too long an absence,” Mohammed VI told the closing ceremony of the AU summit in Ethiopia.

“Africa is my continent and my home. I am finally home and I am happy to see you. I missed you all.”

Morocco quit the then Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1984 after the bloc admitted the former Western Sahara as a separate member.

Morocco maintains that the territory under its control is an integral part of the kingdom, while the Polisario Front, which campaigns for independence, demands a referendum on self-determination.

Some had feared Morocco would seek the expulsion of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) as a precondition for its own return to the AU, however the country agreed to return without conditions.

“From the moment that Morocco did not impose conditions … we take their word for it and accept that Morocco be admitted to the African Union,” said Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, foreign minister of the SADR, which claims sovereignty over the entire territory of Western Sahara.

Salek said Monday that having Morocco in the same room would allow the SADR to pressure them into fulfilling their obligations and hold a long sought referendum.

Mohammed did not raise the issue of Western Sahara in his speech, choosing instead to highlight how Morocco as “one of the most developed African nations”, could be a boon to the continent.

– ‘Common economic growth’ –
He noted that in the past 17 years, Morocco had sealed nearly 1,000 agreements with African nations, and put in place projects such as a gas pipeline deal linking Nigeria to Europe and others to improve agricultural productivity.

He recalled that Morocco had taken part in six peacekeeping operations on the continent.

“We do not ignore the fact that we do not have unanimity in this noble assembly. We do not want to create divisions as some have insinuated,” he said.

“My vision of South-South cooperation is clear and constant. Morocco … will be a motor for common economic growth.

“It is time that Africa’s riches benefit Africa. For too long we have looked elsewhere to make decisions, commitments. Is it not time to turn towards our own continent?”

Despite reservations by some members, outgoing chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zama said the return of Morocco would “provide a platform to strengthen African solutions to African problems.”

The busy AU summit also saw Chadian foreign minister Moussa Faki Mahamat take over from Dlamini-Zuma after a fierce election battle that eliminated four other candidates.

Guinea’s Alpha Conde took over the rotating presidency of the bloc, and called for the continent to express solidarity with Somalia, Libya and Sudan, which have been targeted by a United States travel ban.

Boko Haram sacks military base, 3 soldiers feared dead in Borno

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

BY NDAHI MARAMA, MAIDUGURI
suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram has invaded a military base/camp of ‘Operation Lafiya Dole’ in Kamuya village of Buratai ward of Biu Local Government Area of Borno state, where they sacked the soldiers at their duty post, before carting away arms and ammunitions. Sources have revealed.

The sources also alleged that three soldiers were feared dead.

Kamuya is located about 6 kilometres to Buratai, the ancestral home of the Chief of Army Staff, Leuitenant General Tukur Buratai.

The incident according to sources took place on Wednesday, but due to lack of telecommunication network in the area, as it was hitherto vandalized by the sect, the information had to be delayed before reaching the press.

“There was a bloody attack on a military camp in Kamuya by suspected terrorists on Wednesday. The attackers first succeeded in sacking the soldiers at their duty post, after which, they invaded the camp and carted away with huge arms and ammunitions.

“It was also gathered that three soldiers were feared dead with the setting ablaze of the entire camp”. The sources said.

As it is, all effort to get confirmation from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Victor Isuku proved abortive as his cell phone lines were not reachable at press time, and that the military authority are yet to issue any statement on the attack. End
