Arising from a two-day national workshop on “Building Information Modelling (BIM): Concept, Application and Benefits in Projects Development” organised by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) recently in PortHarcourt, Rivers state, participants at the workshop comprising built environment professionals and other stakeholders have called on the government at all levels to spearhead the implementation process of BIM through funding, development of BIM standard and promulgation of appropriate legislation. This was contained in a six-paragraph communique issued at the end of the two-day workshop.

The workshop which urged Bureau of Public Procurement to encourage and subsequently make the use of BIM mandatory in projects of certain magnitudes as a starting point, further urged relevant autorities to incorporate the concept of “GREEN” into implementation of BIM.

According to the document, all professional bodies in the built environment should come together and champion the sensitization and awareness campaign on the use of BIM for project development, while calling on professional bodies in the built environment to collaborate with other stakeholders in the industry to develop a roadmap for its adoption and application on projects.

The participants further called on professional bodies in the built environment to assume the new roles defined by BIM and adopt it in their service delivery, while professional bodies should collaboration with Nigerian Universities Commission and National Board for Technical Education should incorporate BIM into the curricular of various built environment programmes of higher institutions and professional bodies in the country.

The workshop noted that there is enough evidence to suggest that the rapid evolution of BIM technology in the global construction industry and its revolutionary impact will definitely creep into the Nigerian construction industry, pointing out that this will require changes in the project delivery methods and the roles of professionals in the industry may change. It further said the technology will be essential to facilitate information exchange among practitioners and thereby  enhancing project delivery and value for money for clients.
