Trump accuses Obama of releasing Guantanamo militants

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

President Donald Trump, Tuesday, tweeted that Guantanamo inmates who returned to militant activity were released from the U.S. military prison by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

“122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!” Trump wrote.

The 113 of the 122 former prisoners confirmed by U.S. intelligence agencies to have “re-engaged” were released by Obama’s predecessor, George W Bush.

Bush began sending suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban combatants in January 2002 to the base on Cuba.

Data posted by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence showed that until the end of July 2016, 532 prisoners were released or transferred to the custody of other governments under Bush, with another 161 released under Obama.

Among those whose recidivism was considered confirmed, only nine were released by Obama.

The Pentagon said Monday that a U.S. airstrike against an al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) target last week in Yemen killed Yasir al-Silmi, who was held at Guantanamo from 2002 to 2009.

The BBC reported last month that Abu Zakariya al-Britani, a British-born Muslim convert who was held at Guantanamo for about two years starting in 2002, died in a suicide attack for the Islamic State movement against Iraqi forces near Mosul.

Man kills friend over girlfriend, bags 8yrs jail term

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

A 24-year-old man, Sodiq Salaudeen, was on Tuesday  sentenced to eight years imprisonment for killing his friend during a fight over a girl friend at Ijanikin area of Lagos.

The convict was sentenced by Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos, after changing the initial charge of murder to manslaughter.

The judge observed that the three witnesses who testified before the court were not at the scene when the crime occurred.

“The court will be relying on the statement of the defendant which showed that he had no intention to kill the deceased.

“The statement read and I quote: `I used the iron from the Hausa man’s shop to stab him on the left side of his chest. I only wanted to scare him because I was being overpowered by him and his friends; I did not intend to kill him.

“The court is satisfied that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the defendant caused the death of the deceased,” she said.

Pronouncing the sentence, the judge, however, said that Salaudeen’s eight-year sentence will start from the day he was first detained for the crime.

“The defendant is hereby sentenced to eight years in prison with effect from April 19, 2012.”

Salaudeen, who was dressed in a white attire, had an expression of relief on his face after the sentence was pronounced.

Prior to the sentence, counsel to the convict, Mr K.O. Adebayo, had in his plea for leniency told the court that the convict committed the offence out of youthful exuberance.

“The defendant is a young man with an aged father who has been a widower for quite sometime.

“The crime occurred as a result of youthful exuberance and there was no intention to kill.

“Since the objective of punishment is to reform and not for retribution, I plea for a lighter sentence for the convict so that he can still be useful to the society,” said Adebayo.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Adebayo Haroun, the convict, who was 19 years old when the offence was committed, stabbed one Tope Akinyemi with a sharp object in his chest during a fight.

“The deceased and Salaudeen had attended the same secondary school and knew each other.

“They developed a liking for the same girl and a rivalry developed between them which led to a fight with their friends joining.

“When Salaudeen felt that Akinyemi was gaining an upper hand in the fight, he ran into the nearby kiosk of a Hausa trader to pick a sharp object which he used to stab the deceased once in the chest leading to his death,” he said.

During the trial, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Insp. Festus Imoru, confirmed that the fight that led to Akinyemi’s death was caused by a female.

“During my investigations, I got to know that the two men were asking the unknown girl out and this led to a bitter rivalry between them.

“Efforts to get the name of the girl who caused the fracas was, however, abortive,” said the IPO.

Mertesacker admits tension in Arsenal squad…See full details

Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker admitted to tension in the dressing room on Monday and said his struggling team haven’t shown enough fight, on the eve of their Champions League mission impossible.

Arsene Wenger’s side crashed to a third defeat in their last four Premier League games on Saturday as Liverpool beat them 3-1 at Anfield and the Arsenal manager has had to dismiss reports of a training-ground bust-up involving star forward Alexis Sanchez.

Wenger dropped Sanchez against Liverpool, only introducing him at half-time when his team already trailed by two goals.

It was the worst possible preparation for Arsenal’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, when they face the almost impossible task of overturning a 5-1 deficit.

And to make matters worse, German defender Mertesacker conceded Arsenal haven’t been willing to put their bodies on the line.

“I think we saw on a lot of occasions that we absolutely weren’t ready for a fight,” Mertesacker told reporters at the club’s training base.

“That is what I want to see tomorrow. That we are up for a fight, to challenge for something. We haven’t competed a lot in recent games and we need to turn that around.

“At Liverpool we had a chance to go for it, to push it, even without our best player on the pitch.”

Arsenal’s troubles have brought renewed criticism of Wenger from fans and pundits, with many claiming it is time for the Frenchman to step down after almost 21 years with the north Londoners.

Mertesacker, who has been with Arsenal since 2011, admitted the current dip has led to a fraught atmosphere, but he insisted the players still support Wenger.

“It’s hard for the manager to select the team but he does it with the best intention. We trust him,” Mertesacker said.

“It’s a little bit tense but it’s normal in a stretch like that. We want to change it and you can feel that in every training session.

“We need to make the first step to get the fans on board again.”

Mertesacker refused to be drawn on reports that Sanchez has become isolated from the rest of the squad after apparently criticising his team-mates following the Bayern first leg.

Amid suggestions Sanchez wants to leave, Mertesacker was asked how the Chilean was regarded by the players.

“I don’t understand the question. Every single day we try to train,” Mertesacker said.

“The manager has 25 options so it is difficult for him to decide who is in the squad. Everyone wants to push to be in that starting line-up.

“All these questions about one player are very distracting to our team. The club will not be about one single player.”

Osinbajo responds to nationwide anti-government protests (Read full details)

Yemi Osinbajo

As Nigerians trooped out Monday to protest against the federal government’s shoddy handling of the economic crisis skyrocketing prices of food items, the presidency said it was not unaware of the hardships people face daily.

Acting president Yemi Osinbajo said the protesters’ pains were noted and that the government would work towards re-positioning the economy to ease them off.

“To those who are protesting, WE HEAR YOU loud and clear,” he tweeted. “We hear you loud and clear, those who are on the streets protesting the economic situation and even those who are not, but feel the pain of economic hardship.”

“We hear you loud and clear. You deserve a decent life and we are working night and day to make life easier.”

The protests championed by music star 2Face lost a bit of momentum when the Afro-pop singer pulled out, citing security concerns. His decision to stay off today’s protest divided opinions among Nigerians.

But his call to action had received widespread popular support and several civil society organisations vowed to carry on with the protest.

Though the Lagos command of the Nigerian police had warned against the demonstrations because of possibility of “breakdown of law and order with attendant loss of lives and property,” it, however,  provided security for the protesters.

WHO develops guide to early cancer diagnosis (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2k7C8JC

Cancer cells

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says its has developed a guide to effectively address all barriers to early diagnosis of cancer. In a message released to the Commemoration of the 2017 World Cancer Day on Saturday, WHO called for improved access to treatment of cancer.

The message read: “In anticipation of World Cancer Day, WHO has developed a Guide to Cancer Early Diagnosis, to help effectively address barriers to early cancer diagnosis.

“The guide aims to help policy-makers, programme managers and cancer advocates develop or strengthen programmes that improve early diagnosis and access to treatment.

“The consequences are more people surviving cancer, less morbidity and lower costs from treatment.”

WHO said it had provided guidance on how to address the cancer challenge through comprehensive cancer control, founded on global coordination and strong health systems.

The UN health agency added that it had helped lead engagement of partner UN agencies and entities, such as the UN Joint Global Programme on Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control.

According to WHO, collaboration is critical to producing a stronger response against the disease that needlessly claims the lives of millions around the world each year.

“New WHO figures released this week indicate that cancer deaths continue to increase. “In 2015, 8.8 million people died from cancer, mostly in low- and middle-income countries,”IL it said.

WHO emphasised that globally, common challenges to cancer control are delays in cancer diagnosis and inaccessible treatment. “Even in countries with strong health systems and services, many cancer cases are diagnosed at a late-stage, when they are harder to treat successfully.

“On World Cancer Day, WHO acknowledges the role of all stakeholders to strengthen coordination and health systems in cancer control, working toward a future of healthy lives for all,” it stated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Cancer Day, organised by the Union for International Cancer Control and celebrated each year on Feb. 4, is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer.

NAN also reports that the theme of World Cancer Day 2017 is `We can, I can’. It highlights the need for multi-sectoral participation.
