Nurses shun shift duty over non-payment of 3 months allowance

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Nurses in the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Plateau, have shunned shift duty following non-payment of their three months shift duty allowance.

The nurses have adjusted to working the regular hours of  7 a.m to 3 p.m daily, exclusive of weekends.

Mr Mustapha Kabir, the Chairman, Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), JUTH chapter, confirmed this development to journalists on Monday in Jos.

Kabir said that his members were yet to receive the N63 million released to the management of the tertiary health institution in December 2015 for the payment of the three months shift duty allowance.

However, he attributed the delay and non-payment of the arrears to payment migration to the IPPIS in 2015, when the Federal Government mopped up the fund by the end of 2015.

The chairman also blamed the management for treating the matter with levity and failure to retrieve the workers legitimate entitlements from the government treasury in spite of being reminded by the union throughout 2016.

“Throughout 2016, we waited for the management to get back the money from the Federal Government, but they failed in spite of our notice to them, hence our resolve to stop further shift duties,” he said.

Kabir said that the indefinite industrial action commenced on March 7, until their demand was met.

He further revealed that radiologists, medical lab scientists and pharmacists were also on strike in the institution.

“No nurse runs afternoon or night shift, as all the nurses come to work only in the morning to perform their duties and close at 4 p.m,” he said.

Reacting, the Chief Medical Director of JUTH, Dr Edmond Banwat, said that the management was working earnestly to resolve the issue.

Banwat assured that the funds would soon be made available for payment.

He, however, said that the non-shift embarked upon by the nurses was alien and detrimental to patients.

Banwat lamented that the hospital was not performing optimally due to the actions of some its workers and appealed to them to resume normal duty.

He said that medical doctors were however working round the clock to serve patients.

Russia ‘up to no good’ with its meddling: UK’s Johnson

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Russia must halt “unacceptable” meddling in other countries, especially the Balkans and Ukraine, for there to be any chance of a fresh start with the West, British foreign minister Boris Johnson said Monday.

“Let us be very clear, Russia is up to all sorts of no good,” Johnson said as he arrived for an EU foreign and defence ministers meeting in Brussels.

“They are engaged in cyber warfare, engaged in undermining countries in the Western Balkans — you have seen what happened in Montenegro — to say nothing of what has happened in eastern Ukraine,” he said.

“It is completely unacceptable … they have got to change, they have got to show that they can be trusted again,” he said.

But Johnson, due to visit Moscow shortly, also said no one in Europe or the United States wanted to see a return to Cold War days.

The aim instead must be to “try to engage with the Russians, to try to understand where they are coming from… to get them back on to a better path.”

The 2014 Ukraine crisis plunged ties with Moscow into a freeze reminiscent of the worst days of the Cold War and relations have been badly strained ever since.

Repeated efforts to enforce a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Russian rebels have failed. Western leaders believe Moscow manipulates the fighting to put pressure on them and Kiev.

EU efforts to forge closer ties with the Balkan states meanwhile have stalled, with Brussels seen as failing to deliver on promises of membership and economic progress.

Like Johnson, other EU member states also see Russia’s hand in recent developments, especially in Serbia where Moscow backs its traditional ally in Belgrade in not recognising Kosovo’s independence.

EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini was heckled in the Serbian parliament during a visit last week during which she highlighted the EU’s efforts to normalise ties between Serbia and its breakaway province.

The EU’s 28 national leaders will discuss the Western Balkans at a summit in Brussels on Thursday.

15, 803 benefit from Chevron scholarship since 2009

http://ift.tt/2lOg75O

Chevron

Deepwater Petroleum, a subsidiary of Chevron Nigeria, says a total of 15, 803 students have so far benefitted from the company’s university scholarship scheme since its inception in 2009.

Mr Richard Kennedy, Director of Deepwater Petroleum, said this at the inauguration of a science laboratory it donated to Isanlu-Isin Comprehensive College in Kwara on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the laboratory was built by Chevron Nigeria in collaboration with its co-ventures in Agbami Oil field.

The co-ventures in Agbami Field are Famfa Oil Limited, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Santoil Nigeria Limited and Petroleo Brasileiro Nigeria Limited.

Kennedy said 106 indigenes of Kwara were part of the 15,803 beneficiaries in the areas of medicine, nursing, laboratory sciences and engineering courses.

He noted that out of the 15, 803 beneficiaries, 310 students came out with first class, adding that 32 of the first class graduated from the University of Lagos.

“The donation of the science laboratory is one of the company’s social intervention plan aimed at improving the teaching and learning of science subjects in schools.

“The Agbami co-ventures recognise the importance of education as a catalyst for unlocking the potential of the youth and developing their capacity for societal relevance.

“We are also committed to partner with the government and other stakeholders in supporting efforts towards promoting quality education in Nigeria,” Kennedy said.

He added that the Agbami co-ventures had donated a fully equipped Chest Clinic at Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin, and a hybrid library at Methodist High School, Eruku, also in Kwara.

Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara, in his address, said the provision of qualitative education was one of his government’s cardinal programmes.

Represented by Commissioner for Education, Amuda Yeketi, Ahmed said his government would continue to provide enabling environment for learning in the state.

In his welcome address, Prof. Emmanuel Ibiloye, National President, Isanlu-Isin Development Association, expressed the community’s appreciation to the donors of the laboratory.

He appealed to the state government to convert the college to a science school and rename it Government Science Secondary School, Isanlu-Isin.

Ibiloye said the appeal became necessary because there was no government school in Isin Local Government Area.

Ibiloye also appealed to the state government to post qualified science teachers to the school to handle the equipment in the laboratory.

Barcelona still the best, warns Atletico’s Simeone

http://ift.tt/2kCVzhU

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone insisted Barcelona remain the best team in the world despite their recent struggles ahead of the sides third meeting this month on Sunday.

A poor opening first 45 minutes in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie cost Atletico dear as wonder goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi put Barca well on their way to a 3-2 aggregate win.

However, since then Barca have been thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and needed a last-minute Messi penalty to see off lowly Leganes last weekend, placing coach Luis Enrique in the firing line.

“Barca are still the best in the world,” said Simeone on Saturday.

“It is very difficult to compete as they have in the past decade. With Luis Enrique they have eight trophies, competed at the highest level and one bad game like against Paris can happen to anyone.

“We played three extraordinary halves against them and still didn’t get through, that shows that they are better.”

By contrast, Atletico are well on course to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for a fourth straight year after a 4-2 win away at Bayer Leverkusen in their last 16, first leg on Tuesday.

Kevin Gameiro looks set to keep his place ahead of Fernando Torres alongside Antoine Griezmann up front as he shone brightest despite all three getting on the scoresheet in midweek.

Atletico will be further boosted by the return of defensive lynchpin Diego Godin from injury, whilst goalkeeper Jan Oblak could make his first appearance since December after recovering from surgery on a dislocated shoulder.

Luis Enrique, meanwhile, is hoping a first midweek off since the turn of the year is what Barca needed to recharge their batteries and recover their form.

“It is the first free midweek we have had in 2017. The schedule has been brutal and it is evident that takes its toll,” said Enrique.

“The week allowed us to work on things, for the team to rest and analyse what is going on with the team.”

Real Madrid’s defeat to Valencia in midweek means Barca still trail their title rivals by just a point.

And Luis Enrique’s men can go top for at least a few hours with victory at the Vicente Calderon, with Madrid not in action until later on Sunday at Villarreal.

Another federal lawmaker dumps PDP for APC (Read full details)

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara shakes hand with Emmanuel Ukoette who formally defected from PDP to APC on February 22, 2016. PHOTO: TWITTER/HOUSE OF REPS

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member in the House of Representatives, Emmanuel Ukoette, representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom on Wednesday, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He is the second member of the National Assembly from the state to switch loyalty to the APC. In January, Senator Nelson Effiong representing Akwa Ibom South senatorial district, also defected to the APC.

In a letter to the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, read on the floor of the House, Ukoette notified the House of his defection. He said he was leaving the PDP because of the inability of factions within the party to reconcile their differences.

“It is clear to Nigerians that the PDP is factionalised and therefore, baring members, especially I from engaging my constituents well enough.

“The factions within the party are led by the National Chairman of the Party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff and Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi.

“The string of legal battles trailing the leadership crisis might end in fiasco and that is not the ideals of the founding fathers and, therefore, my resolve to move to the APC,’’ he said.

Speaking on point of order, the Minority Leader, Rep. Leo Ogor (PDP- Delta), urged the Speaker to declare Ukoette’s seat vacant. Ogor said Ukoette’s defection move would be challenged in court, adding that democracy was not about jumping from one political party to another.

“My Speaker, this defection will be challenged in the court because it is not true that the PDP is factionalised.

“I urge you to declare Ukoette’s seat vacant, so that he can go back for a fresh election and see if he will win an election on his new platform,’’ he said.

However, the Majority Leader of the House, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamela (APC-Lagos), urged to accept the situation with self-control.

“We are in a season of alternative path. One day, we have a swelling of the ranks of the opposition, the other day; we have a depletion of the ranks.

“I understand the feeling of the Minority Leader, but I believe that he should accept the loss because it appears more PDP members will join the APC,’’ Gbajabiamila said.

Earlier, Speaker Dogara swore in a new member, Rep. Johnson Oghuma (APC) to replace Phillip Shuaibu, who was elected as the Edo Deputy Governor on Sept. 28, 2016.

Oghuma represents Etsako Federal Constituency, Edo.

Shema, three others granted N1bn bail each (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2lCHoss

A Katsina State High Court on Tuesday granted a former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shema and three others N1 billion bail and one reliable surety each.

Others standing trial with the governor are former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Sani Makana, former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Lawal Safana and former ALGON Chairman, Lawal Dankaba.
The accused persons are standing trial for alleged conspiracy, forgery and diversion of public funds amounting to N11 billion.

Justice Ibrahim Bako granted bail to the accused person in a ruling he delivered at the resumed hearing of the trial. The judge also held that the court has jurisdiction to try the case.

He said that the state’s Attorney-General has the right to initiate criminal proceedings against any person in any court of law.

Bako also held that EFCC as a federal government agency has the right to try any financial crime related cases in any court in Nigeria. He adjourned the case to March 28 for the continuation of hearing.

Earlier, Mr Joseph Daudu, SAN, the counsel to the accused persons urged the court to grant bail to his clients.
He argued that by virtue of their positions, the accused persons deserved to be granted bail and the offences they are charged with are bailable.

Daudu also challenged the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the trial.

The prosecutor, Mr Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), opposed the application for bail of the accused persons and urged the court to hold that it has the jurisdiction to entertain the trial. He said that the offences allegedly committed by the accused persons contravene Sections 312 and 364, Cap 96 of the Penal Code, Laws of Katsina State, 1991.

Okutepa urged the court to remand the accused persons in prison custody.

Time to embrace technology after ghost goal, says Luis Enrique (Read full details)

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique called on the Spanish football authorities to introduce goal line technology after his side was denied a clear goal as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Real Betis on Sunday.

Barca should have been level seconds after Alex Alegria’s opener for Betis 15 minutes from time when Riza Durmisi deflected a cross towards his own goal and the ball crossed the line before Aissa Mandi’s desperate clearance.

“I have seen a photo. It is the same debate as always, the referees need help,” said Enrique. “The technology can help them. I say that for all situations not just ones that go for me, but against me too.”

Unlike the Premier League and Serie A, La Liga has so far refused to install goal line technology with La Liga president Javier Tebas citing cost as his main concern.

Barca eventually salvaged a point in the final minute as Luis Suarez swept home Lionel Messi’s defence splitting pass. However, the Catalans missed the chance to go top of the table ahead of Real Madrid’s clash with Real Sociedad later on Sunday.

Madrid still lead Barca by a point and now have two games in hand. And despite their misfortune, Suarez and Enrique recognised that Barca were well below par in a match that Betis dominated for 75 minutes.

“We are aware that we didn’t play well and we have to be critical of ourselves,” said Suarez. “We are obliged to win and now we have to wait for those at the top of the table to lose.”

Betis had hit the crossbar and post through Dani Ceballos and Ruben Castro in the second-half before Alegria finally put them in front. And Castro also missed a one-on-one with Marc-Andre ter Stegen with the score at 1-0.

“In the first-half we made quite a few mistakes and they had good counter-attacks without having clear chances,” added Enrique. “In the second-half until they scored they were clearly the better team and we were a long way from our best. “Possibly the sensations after the last few minutes change the impression of things, but I think we have clearly won a point (rather than lost two).”

Time to embrace technology after ghost goal, says Luis Enrique
