Trump hosts Trudeau for tricky White House talks

http://ift.tt/2kpgkss

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived at the White House Monday for what could be difficult trade and immigration talks with his political opposite, President Donald Trump.

After striking up a much-flaunted “bromance” with president Barack Obama, the youthful liberal leader is in Washington to woo a septuagenarian Republican, with whom he shares little in common.

The focus of discussions will be Trump’s determination to put “America first” and rip up the North America Free Trade Agreement, as well as differences over immigration.

Trump has followed the dictum that good fences make good neighbors — vowing to increase tariffs on imports and build a wall on the Mexican border and trying to ban migrants from several Muslim-majority nations.

The US-Canadian border remains open, but Trump’s travel ban has called into question the “pre-clearance” system allowing Canadians to clear US Customs and immigration checks at their point of departure.

Trudeau visit got off to an awkward start, when he arrived at the White House early and his limousine was forced to wait on the driveway for around five minutes before Trump came out.

The two men then greeted each other with a handshake and headed into the Oval Office.

Trudeau is the third foreign leader received by the Republican billionaire since he took office on January 20, following meetings with Britain’s Theresa May and Japan’s Shinzo Abe.

The US and Canadian leaders will have lunch and hold a roundtable with businesswomen to discuss women in the workforce. A joint press conference set for 2:00 pm (1900 GMT).

The 45-year-old Canadian prime minister has pledged to speak “frankly and respectfully” with the new occupant of the White House.

“Canada will always stay true to the values that have made us this extraordinary country, a place of openness,” Trudeau said Friday in Yellowknife, the capital of the country’s Northwest Territories.

The economic ties between America and its northern neighbor, who share the world’s longest common border, run deep: three-quarters of Canada’s exports go to the US, and Canada is the top destination for exports from about 30 US states.

Renegotiating NAFTA will not be simple and Trudeau, a fervent supporter of free trade, has emphasized the importance of the tripartite pact for his country’s economy and warned against protectionism.

On Friday, he recalled “the fact that millions of good jobs on both sides of our border depend on the smooth flow of goods and services across the border.”

Trump has not been specific on how he wants the talks to develop, but has repeatedly trashed the 23-year-old pact, calling it a “catastrophe” for American jobs and threatening to slap tariffs on imports from Mexico.

– Polar opposites –
Trump and Trudeau are a study in contrasts: their path to power, their political stripes, their style — they could not be more different.

Trudeau, the son of a well-liked prime minister, came to power promising to “provide a positive and good government for Canadians” and enhance the country’s image abroad.

Manhattan property mogul Trump won the White House in a shock November election victory over Hillary Clinton after painting a dark picture of a country in turmoil and vowing to put “America first.”

Welcomed with great fanfare to Washington nearly a year ago by Obama, Trudeau hailed the Democratic president’s “leadership” on climate change.

But it’s clear he will find a quite different take on the issue from Trump, who counts several climate skeptics in his inner circle and seems determined to undo large parts of his predecessor’s legacy.

So far, Trudeau has not commented directly on Trump’s controversial immigration order — which temporarily bans all refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US.

But he made his stance clear in a tweet posted the day after Trump signed his decree late last month.

“To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada,” Trudeau wrote.

The pair do agree on the massive Keystone XL pipeline project, which would link Canada’s oil sands with US Gulf Coast refineries. The project had been blocked by Obama, but has been given the green light by Trump.

Martial makes point as Man Utd close on City…See full details

http://ift.tt/2kU6TD2

Manchester United's Spanish midfielder Juan Mata (2L) scores the opening goal during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Watford at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on February 11, 2017.<br />Lindsey PARNABY / AFP

Juan Mata and Anthony Martial helped Manchester United extend their brilliant Premier League form as they outclassed Watford in a comfortable 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho may have a reputation as a defensive manager, but that accusation could not be made during this contest as United were wonderfully entertaining from start to finish.

With an attack containing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitayran and both goalscorers, United had class to spare and Walter Mazzarri’s Watford had no real answers.

Mourinho will be particularly pleased with the return to form of Martial, a player who has blown hot and cold recently following speculation about his future.

United’s impressive league form has seen them go unbeaten since their humiliating 4-0 reverse at leaders Chelsea on October 23.

They now trail fourth-place Manchester City by just a point ahead of their derby rivals’ trip to Bournemouth on Monday.

Watford arrived in Manchester confident, however, after consecutive wins over Arsenal and Burnley.

United had the best of the opening moments, but clear-cut chances were a rarity early on. That was to change.

Antonio Valencia’s deflected cross fell to Ibrahimovic 12 yards out after 60 seconds, but he mishit his volley, while a jinking run from Martial had Watford worried until his shot deflected wide.

Watford were clearly up for the fight as Jose Holebas and M’Baye Niang targeted Valencia on United’s right flank and repeatedly ran through on David de Gea’s goal, but could not make it count.

After 17 minutes, Paul Pogba nearly opened the scoring with a fine effort from 25 yards that Heurelho Gomes managed to brilliantly claw away at full stretch.

– Twisted the knife –

United slowly turned up the tempo and had three brilliant opportunities as Watford began to sit back, a tactic that can prove fatal at Old Trafford.

Firstly Ibrahimovic volleyed over following a fine ball from Pogba before the Frenchman almost scored himself, volleying Valencia’s low cross goalwards, only for Gomes to produce another smart save.

The best opportunity, though, fell to Mkhitaryan, who blasted over from Mata’s intelligent pass, much to Mourinho’s dismay.

It felt like Watford’s resistance had to break and so it proved.

With Mourinho imploring the home crowd to chant more loudly in support of his side, Gomes produced a stunning close-range block from Ibrahimovic before Mata broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute.

Martial ran Watford ragged down the left and his pinpoint pass gave Mata an easy tap-in from four yards out for his ninth goal of the season.

Watford somehow reached half-time just a goal down, but Mourinho’s men continued where they had left off after the interval as a Martial effort just went wide of the far post 60 seconds into the second half.

Martial did a little better on the hour, grabbing his side’s second goal as United twisted the knife.

In the blink of an eye, Ibrahimovic fed Martial near the halfway line and he ran through on goal, took his time and then beat Gomes at his near post through a thicket of defenders.

After the goal Watford actually improved as they chased the match and Daryl Janmaat should have halved the deficit with 20 minutes to go, only to blast wastefully over from 12 yards out.

It summed up Watford’s afternoon as United closed up at the back and ran down the clock with ease.

The Biography Of Sjava [Age, Life Profile & Net Worth]

http://ift.tt/2lx8Lk8

p

Sjava is a South African-born singer and songwriter. The Bergville-born and Joburg raised musician, popularly known as Sjava ka Mnisi
or just Sjava, is popularly all over Africa.

After a long struggle trying to make things happen for himself. The Ambitious Entertainment recruit spoke to The New Age about some of the glitches that made it a mamoth task to finally make his long- awaited entry into African Trap Movement (ATM), a sub-genre of SA hip hop.

The singer and rapper says he is proud of his journey. Getting a break at 35 has served to encourage many others to follow their dreams regardless of circumstacnes and age. “Frankly, growing up was tough.

My mother used to sell food at the taxi terminus while my absent father was in and out of our household. “However, I have not allowed this to hinder my progress. I haven not allowed myself to be the product of my circumstances. “I have risen above all the adversities and to commit to making my life different and better,” popular rapper of the Ekseni fame told The New Age in a frank interview.

He says ATM is more than “trap rap music”, but a way of life for him and many others who felt trapped by their unpalatable situations. He says the way to go is to rise above “those dire circumstances, and to make things happen for yourself just as I have shown it can be done”. “We are trapped. I was once trapped in the jungle of Joburg CBD.

Things are different today. My friends Emtee and Ruff and I have move out of our unhation. We have made something good of ourselves, turningadversities into something with a great promise. We have Africanised trap music with our approach to life.” Sjava philosophises about his music. Having tried his hand at acting, Sjava says he decided “I had had enough with acting; it not what I wanted.

Music is what I wanted to create for myself. It is my first love. Acting was just incidental. Having been acting for more than nine years, there were obvious questions I had to ask myself before quitting. But the long and short of it is that I decided to quit and to follow my dream, which was music. It was my first love.” The hustle and bustle of Jozi city life is reflected in Sjava’s sound track as.

Together with his friends they have “hustled” their way to the shiny offices of Ambitiouz Records, one of the newest record labels in the country. “Being together, working and living life as a team and as a unit holds special memories for me,” Sjava says. “Sometimes I would be in the booth recording, and all the memories would flood back. If it were not for Emtee or Ruff, I would not be having this interview with you. I owe my success to them and. I am also grateful to Ambitiouz Records for investing their hard earned money into ship-shaping our careers,” Sjava says.

Sjava first made an impression on his music fans when he was featured on the Ms Pruh’s song, Ameni, which also featured label mates Emtee and Fifi Cooper, among others. The song has since become one of the most played songs on radio.

Its music videos are rotated on all the television music channels. Now with the recently released 18-track debut album, Isinamuva, Sjava is carving a path as a solo artist, with warmly received singles such as Ekseni, Vura and his favourite, Gogo, a song he says summaries and captures his journey thus far.

“I cant say I have a favourite song in that album, as every single one of the songs on the album tells a story. However, the song Gogo, which is the last song on the my album, really summarises my journey in the industry,” he said.

The multi-talented singer and has featured in television productions that include Generations, Zone 14, 7de Laan, Soul City and Gugu No Andile.

He has no regrets about his long road to stardom. “While life has changed, there are new problems to deal with. I cannot afford to bec-ome big headed.”

Those behind rumoured death of Buhari are wicked, callous, says Obasanjo (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2kq1TG9

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has described the persons behind the rumoured death of President Muhammadu Buhari as “wicked and callous.”

A statement issued on Friday in Abeokuta by Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s Media Aide, quoted the former president as saying, “President Buhari needs our prayers rather than bad wishes.”

He said that prayers from well meaning persons, particularly, Nigerians would help Buhari to get well quickly and ginger his morale to return to the country stronger and better.

Obasanjo, who warned Nigerians against “politicisation of the president’s health,’’ recalled that he had also been a victim of such rumoured death while he was President in 1999.

Obasanjo said: “No normal human being will wish an elderly person dead irrespective of their differences.

“If you don’t like him, wait for another election and stop spreading rumour that he is dead.

“No matter what his health situation, maybe, we should pray for him to recover quick and come back stronger and better.

“For anyone wishing him dead, such person or group of persons are callous, wicked and treacherous.

“I was also rumored to have died almost 12 times.

“I don’t know what they derive from doing so, but, they should seek for forgiveness.

“Even if we know that the President is sick, he is in a better position to know what to say or what to do and not wishing him dead.

“We should just stop politicising everything, especially with the elderly in the country.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that recently, there were rumoured reports in the social media of Buhari’s death at a London hospital.

The presidency however dismissed the reports saying Buhari was on a ten-day vacation leave and was not on admission at any hospital in London.

Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, said the President intended to undergo routine medical check-up during his vacation in London.
