Chancellor Angela Merkel is planning to hold her first meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington on March 14, the White House and a German government source said Friday.

White House deputy spokeswoman Sarah Sanders confirmed the date of the meeting and said a joint press conference was likely.

“Such a plan is in the works,” the German source said. Separately, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that “we are not denying” reports of the planned meeting.

While former US president Barack Obama had labelled Merkel an “outstanding partner,” there has been little known contact between the German leader and Trump since he took office.

Following Trump’s shock election, Merkel reminded the billionaire of democratic values in their first phone conversation.

Any “close cooperation” must be on the basis of the “values of democracy, freedom, respect for the rule of law and human dignity, regardless of origin, skin colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political belief,” she said at the time.

Merkel has also criticised Trump’s decision seeking to ban citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

In turn, Trump has been a strident critic of Merkel’s liberal refugee policy that has led more than a million asylum seekers to come to Germany since 2015.

Senate probes alleged Customs raid of Ogun market

The Senate on Thursday mandated its Committee on Customs, Tariff and Excise to investigate alleged unlawful raid of rice shops at Kayero Market, Sango Ota, Ogun by Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that officials of the service were said to have raided the market on Feb. 22 and allegedly carted away goods and other commodities described as contraband.

The senate’s resolution followed a motion by Sen. Gbolahan Dada (Ogun-APC), who alleged that the Customs officers broke into shops and made away with goods worth billions of naira.

Dada argued that by the provisions of the Customs and Excise Management Act, the officers lacked constitutional and statutory powers to break into shops or premises without a valid court order or search warrant.

He said that by the provisions of the law, “even when such order or warrant is obtained, it must be executed in the presence of witnesses or concerned shop or premises owner.

Dada explained that the essence of that provision was to preserve the rule of law, avoid breakdown of law and order and prevent self-help remedies by aggrieved persons.

He said that the Sango Ota raid was not the first time officers of the service would engage in such perceived lawless action against Nigerian traders.

While condemning the act, Dada said that it was highly unconscionable for officers of Nigeria Customs Service to claim that the confiscated bags of rice and cartons of vegetable oil were smuggled products.

“The unlawful action of officers of Nigeria Customs Service for raiding shops indiscriminately and confiscating goods already in the country is becoming worrisome, disturbing and capable of breaching fragile peace we are enjoying in this country.

“If nothing is done by this hallowed chamber to stop unlawful raids of shops and confiscation of goods without obtaining valid court order or search warrant, a time is coming when Nigerians will resist such untoward action.”

In his contribution, Sen. Adamu Aliero (Kebbi-APC) opposed the motion, arguing that the Customs officers simply carried out their legitimate constitutional assignment and should not be queried by the parliament.

But, Sen. Murtala Nyako (Adamawa-APC) countered him, insisting that the matter must be investigated to ascertain the true position of the allegation, whether or not the officers acted within the law.

He pointed out that it was not proper for the officers to break into the shops of traders as alleged without authorization as specified by the law.

Nyako stressed that constituted authorities must respect the law of the land and the rights of citizens.

When put to voice vote by the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at the plenary, the motion was overwhelmingly supported and adopted.

Consequently, Ekweremadu directed the Committee of Customs, Tariffs and Excise to investigate the matter urgently.

China urges nuclear talks resumption with North Korea

China on Friday urged a resumption of six-party talks with North Korea on Pyongyang’s nuclear programme, saying a “negative cycle” of nuclear missile tests followed by sanctions must end.

“Today, what we see is nuclear test, sanction, nuclear test and then sanction again,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

“This negative cycle should not continue. Because the ultimate end result could be something that no one can bear. It’s a situation where everyone loses,” he said.

Wang stressed that UN Security Council resolutions — including sanctions — against Pyongyang should be fully implemented, but added: “We cannot give up on seeking a resumption of talks.”

“On this point, the United States and North Korea … must quickly come to a political decision,” he said.

“We hope and call on all parties to stop taking any action that would provoke tensions.”

The North quit the now-stalled negotiations aimed at curbing its nuclear weapons programme in 2009, and soon afterwards carried out its second atomic test. The talks are hosted by China, and include South Korea, the United States, Russia, and Japan.

Beijing, the North’s main diplomatic protector and economic benefactor, wants to revive negotiations, although Washington, Seoul and Tokyo all insist Pyongyang must first take some tangible steps towards denuclearisation.

Earlier Friday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson used his first meeting with Wang to urge Beijing to help rein in North Korea after its series of nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

North Korea’s latest missile was launched Sunday near the western city of Kusong and flew east about 500 kilometres (310 miles) before falling into the Sea of Japan (East Sea), South Korea’s defence ministry has said.

Secretary general of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement says the movement and Iran support Syria ceasefire as agreed through negotiations in Kazakhstan’s capital city of Astana, slamming some media reports to the contrary.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah made the remarks from the southern Lebanese city of Baalbek on Sunday afternoon while addressing a ceremony held to commemorate late senior member of Hezbollah Central Council, Sheikh Hussein Obeid.

Some Arab media outlets have been falsely accusing Hezbollah of rejecting Syria ceasefire concluded in Astana talks, he said, adding, “Hezbollah and Iran support the ceasefire, the reconciliation, and the political settlement in Syria, while some Arab states are still backing the military option.”

Hezbollah leader noted that the movement is working with the Syrian government to find a way to put an end to the humanitarian crisis in Foua and Kefraya and other Syrian towns.

Nasrallah rejected reports about the movement’s plan to bring about demographic changes in Syria, saying, “We categorically deny the accusations raised by those who claim that Hezbollah and the Syrian government seek demographic change across the Syrian cities.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Nasrallah stated that recent military gains by Syrian forces, especially in Aleppo, have contributed to restoring security to most cities across the country.

Nasrallah said the liberation of Aleppo changed the course of developments inside Syria and paved the ground for dialogue between authorities in Damascus and representatives of armed groups, instead of “hotel opposition” figures.

Reflecting on the situation of Syrian refugees, the Hezbollah chief noted, that the Syrian refugees must be reassured in order to return to their country.

He added that all the Lebanese parties must deal with the Syrian refugees, who have taken refuge in their country over the past six years, in a humanitarian way and help them to return to their cities in their home country.

Nasrallah stated that Lebanese authorities must establish contacts with their Syrian counterparts in order to put an end to the crisis of Syrian refugees.

During the past six years that the foreign-backed crisis has been raging on in Syria, Hezbollah and the Lebanese military have been defending the country, especially along its northeastern frontier, against spillover of foreign-backed terrorist groups from neighboring Syria.

Hezbollah fighters have fended off several Daesh attacks inside Lebanon as well. They have also been providing assistance to Syrian army forces to counter the ongoing foreign-sponsored militancy.

The movement accuses Israel of supporting Takfiri terrorists operating in the Middle East.

Israel, which continues to occupy Lebanon’s Shebaa Farms and Syria’s Golan Heights, is widely reported to be offering medical help to Takfiri terrorists injured in Syria. In December 2015, British newspaper the Daily Mail said Israel had saved the lives of more than 2,000 Takfiri militants since 2013.

In his Sunday speech, Nasrallah also hailed the efforts exerted by the Lebanese army and the security forces to protect the country against any threat, calling on the political parties to contribute to the country’s peace.

He also dismissed threats posed by the new President of the United States Donald Trump, saying that Hezbollah was not worried about the advent of a “foolish” president in the White House and considered it as good news for oppressed people across the world.

The Vatican will stop minting euro coins bearing Pope Francis’ image beginning in March, religious news agency I.media reported Friday, saying the coins will now carry the Vatican’s coat of arms and European Union stars.

The EU’s official journal on January 24 published pictures of the Vatican’s new coins (eight pieces ranging from one cent to two euros), and they show that Pope Francis’ image has been replaced.

The image on the tails side of the Vatican coin is the same as on all of the other eurozone coins.

Pope Francis, who is known as “the pope of the poor,” has railed against the negative power of money.

Yet, because of their rarity, the coins that have born his image since 2014 have become collector’s items.

They are legal tender everywhere in the eurozone but people who find them through sales generally resell them on the collectors’ market.

The existing agreement between the EU’s monetary union and Italy, which the Vatican relies on to mint its coins, includes a quota especially for the Vatican.

The first annual series of papal coins entered circulation on March 1, 2002 bearing the image of then Pope John Paul II.

Under-fire French presidential candidate Francois Fillon on Thursday responded to claims that his wife had been paid 500,000 euros ($540,000) for a fake job by saying she has “always worked for me”.

Fillon, a conservative who is currently the frontrunner in opinion polls, said British-born Penelope Fillon had been his parliamentary assistant for a number of years doing tasks such as correcting his speeches.

He told TF1 television her role was “perfectly clear”.

“My wife has always worked for me, she has always been by my side in my public life,” Fillon said.

“She corrected my speeches, she received a huge number of people whom I couldn’t see, she represented me at demonstrations, she did press reviews for me and she passed on people’s requests,” Fillon said.

The national financial prosecutor has opened an investigation into the allegations, which were made by the Canard Enchaine newspaper.

Fillon’s lawyer submitted documents Thursday to investigators to support his case.

The Canard Enchaine claims Penelope received the money between 1998 and 2012, but said it could find no one who recalled her working in the parliament building.

Polls currently show Fillon, who has campaigned as a “clean candidate” unsullied by the legal woes of some of his rightwing rivals, will face far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in the election runoff in May.

Scientists say the world has edged closer to apocalypse in the past year amid a darkening security landscape and comments by Donald Trump.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BPA) moved the minute hand of the symbolic Doomsday Clock from three minutes to two-and-a-half minutes to midnight.

It is second closest it has been.

BPA chief Rachel Bronson urged world leaders to “calm rather than stoke tensions that could lead to war”.

In a report, the BPA said President Trump’s statements on climate change, expanding the US nuclear arsenal and the questioning of intelligence agencies had contributed to the heightened global risk.

It is the closest the clock has come to midnight since 1953, when the minute hand was moved to two minutes away following hydrogen bomb tests by the US and Russia.

• What is the Doomsday Clock?

The minute hand on the Doomsday Clock is a metaphor for how vulnerable to catastrophe the world is deemed to be.

The symbolic device was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947. The BPA was founded at the University of Chicago in 1945 by a group of scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons.

Today, the group includes physicists and environmental scientists from around the world, who decide whether to adjust the clock in consultation with the group’s Board of Sponsors – which includes 15 Nobel laureates.

• Why has it moved half a minute closer to midnight?

For the last two years, the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock has stayed set at three minutes before the hour. But the BPA says the danger of global disaster is even greater in 2017, and so has moved the hand forward 30 seconds.

It said: “Disturbing comments about the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons made by Donald Trump, as well as the expressed disbelief in the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change by both Trump and several of his cabinet appointees, affected the Board’s decision, as did the emergence of strident nationalism worldwide.”

Other influencing factors listed in the BPA report include doubts over the future of the Iran nuclear deal, threats to cyber security and the rise of fake news.

The board’s decision to move the clock less than a full minute – something it has never before done – is because Mr Trump has only recently taken office and many of his cabinet nominations are not installed in government.

• How does the threat compare to previous years?

When it was created in 1947, the clock’s hand stood at seven minutes to midnight.

Since then it has changed 22 times, ranging from two minutes to midnight in 1953 to 17 minutes before midnight in 1991.

The clock was last adjusted in 2015 when it was moved from five minutes to three minutes to midnight amid global perils such as climate change and nuclear proliferation.

That was the closest it had been more than 20 years.

It was last at three minutes to in 1984 when US-Soviet relations reached their lowest point.
